justbassintime Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 I have my biggest payout tournament coming up. The fluke bite is on. I still have nightmares about all the large fish I’ve lost while fluke fishing. I changed to Trokar straight hooks and last time out I didn’t lose a fish, but last year I had 2 6# come up and swim off with the fluke totally out of sight in the fishes mouth to set hook and never feel the fish. Any info would be great Quote
Super User burrows Posted May 26, 2018 Super User Posted May 26, 2018 I use the 4/0 skeet Reese eagle claw ewg on my 5 inch super flukes works great I’ll use the Jason Christie 4/0 heavy wire eagle claw if I want to add some weight to it but theses hooks work great! Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted May 26, 2018 Super User Posted May 26, 2018 I use a gamakatsu 3/0 wide gap hook almost exclusively. I land 90 % of the fish I hook on flukes. I use a sweep set ( more horizontal than verticle) , and work hard to keep pressure on the fish during the fight, and also to keep the rod down to not allow the fish to jump.I also tex pose the hook so the point is just out of the fluke. You will miss a few on the hookset, esp. If the fish takes you by suprise and if you arent positioned correctly when setting the hook. 1 Quote
NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 I use a 4/0 trokar EWG on zoom super salty flukes. With hook point barely sticking out the back. Quote

NittyGrittyBoy Posted May 26, 2018 Posted May 26, 2018 I've used Gama's before, good quality hook for price Quote

Super User tcbass Posted May 26, 2018 Super User Posted May 26, 2018 I’ve found that nose-hooking flukes with a CPS Centering Spring will save on many flukes which saves you money and valuable time from not continually putting on new flukes. My current fluke has lasted 2 seasons so far. I use an Owner 2/0 Mosquito hook but found out sometimes the CPS Centering Spring flew off the hook so I added a small piece of shrink tube and it fixed it. You can buy the shrink tube for like $1.40 and it will last years. *** Note: I do not heat the shrink tube afterwards. Good luck on your tournament! 2 1 Quote
Super User Angry John Posted May 26, 2018 Super User Posted May 26, 2018 Regular 4/0 gammy ewg works well. The 5/0 is also good and I use both interchangeable. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 Owner Twist Lock Light hook, 2/0 for the 4" fluke Jr. and 4/0 for the 5". Ever since I started using that hook my flukes have lasted longer and I don't miss fish, if they eat it I'm landing it unless I break off. Keep in mind that it isn't a heavy wire hook but it also isn't light wire like the name, I'd say it is a standard or medium wire hook. Those hooks are the very same that Gary Yamamoto designed to be used with the Senko and when you how long a fluke normally lasts when using that hook you can see why it would be perfect for a Senko. 1 Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted May 27, 2018 Super User Posted May 27, 2018 I use a lot of different hooks for flukes depending on what I want them to do. One that I really like is the VMC XL hook. It's an ewg with a long shank that puts the weight to the middle of the fluke and gives it a horizontal fall. 2 Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted May 28, 2018 Super User Posted May 28, 2018 4/0 EWG of your choice. I have been using the berkley fusion hooks since last season when they went on the buy 2 get one free deal at BPS, with success. Nose hooking a fluke does a good job but it will get snagged on everything. Quote
BeardedBassGuy Posted May 28, 2018 Posted May 28, 2018 I usually use gammy 4/0 offset worm hook, I don't see the need for the ewg since there isn't much plastic that the hook needs to go through. Personal preference 1 Quote

The lakes I fish a nose hooked fluke doesn't cut it. I also throw mine into heavy cover a lot and this would just guarantee a snag, I know, because I've tried many times. Quote

I agree I’m not into the nose hooking deal doesn’t work for me maybe on a spinning rod but I like to hammer down with a weedles ewg. Quote

Mostly docks and light weeds. 1 Quote

Arcs&sparks Posted May 31, 2018 Posted May 31, 2018 @tcbass You just like it cause it’s more durable than something like a rubber band? I’m not sure if I could resist not shrinking it haha Quote
