pondbassin101 Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 And I'm out here freezing in 50° weather(plus 20 mph winds). Kinda glad it doesn't get cold all that often here. (Disclaimer- I caught absolutely nothing except numb hands) Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted January 3, 2018 Super User Posted January 3, 2018 When I was younger in my 50's I fished for musky on the Niagara river in December & also fished the St Lawrence in December requiring shoveling the ramp out to launch. It's doable when you have the fever. Quote
Way north bass guy Posted January 3, 2018 Posted January 3, 2018 I’ve busted through a few hundred yards of 2-3” thick honeycomb ice in the spring to get to open water to troll for lakers, it’s cool in the mornings but usually in the spring once the sun gets up higher and if the wind isn’t too bad, it can be pretty darn nice out, not to mention your likely to have the whole lake to yourself. Reels were freezing....had just lubed my small curado and it froze solid....well...until I dipped it in the balmy 45 degree water and then it worked!! Guides had to be dipped every second or third cast...had to put my hand warmers in my boots and start a couple new ones. Boat ran ok....but we didn't go far (too cold) Saw two other boats. Fish were biting quite good and had one dandy largemouth about five. Would I do it two days in a row.....no. But you only skipped one day Quote

thinkingredneck Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 This summer you won't be jealous when its 100'F and 85% humidity for a solid couple months. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted January 4, 2018 Super User Posted January 4, 2018 Its going to be very cold this weekend for South Florida standards and most fishermen in South Florida are probably going to stay home. I am not one of those who get cold easy so I will be on the water this weekend, no matter how cold and windy it is. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 4, 2018 Super User Posted January 4, 2018 I don't take the kayak out as often in the super cold weather but i do go out and fish for trout in either the spring creeks or small mountain streams. Somehting peaceful and serene about fishing a mountain stream when it is snowing. Only thing that sucks now is I am over an hour drive to trout water where before i was about 15 minutes. Makes a big difference in snowy weather. Quote

Hawkeye21 Posted January 4, 2018 Posted January 4, 2018 I've gone trout fishing in single digits numerous times but I'm usually moving a lot so I stay warm. My feet do get cold occasionally since all I have on are heavy socks and cheap rubber boots while standing in the stream. The biggest issue is the rod tip freezing up. Quote

IndianaFinesse Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 When I was out ice fishing the other day the high was 0 and the real feel at the high was -15, so does that put me in the insane category? Got down to -20 real feel by the time I was off of the ice. Didn't even catch anything though Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted January 7, 2018 Super User Posted January 7, 2018 I came back a couple hours ago from night fishing in Lake Okeechobee from land. It was in the mid 40's-low 50's, very windy, and not the best conditions to fish. I ended up catching a bunch of specks and saw a beautiful sunset on Lake Okeechobee. I would go out on and fish another similar day like this for sure. Quote

This is DEFINITELY reel cleaning/tackle organizing/lure making weather to me! I HAVE fished in weather cold enough to freeze up my reels. Once. I was young and dumb and indestructible back then. I like to think I'm a little smarter now and my joints tell me every morning that I'm a lot older and most definitely not as tough as I once was. Amen brother. With six Saturdays and one Sunday a week and 365 vacation days a year there are plenty of good days to fish. About the only good thing being old. 1 Quote
