DropShotHotShot Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Hey all, I am looking for a recommendation for a rod for my wife. It mostly be used for targeting largemouth around cover. So I want something that she can horse them out if needed, but isn't too big that she gets tired using it Her most used bait is a weightless senko Needs to be spinning rod Budget is around $100 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted December 26, 2017 Super User Posted December 26, 2017 Check with DVT. I had him build a MHF Senko rod for my daughter....except in casting. She wanted a short rod (6') and in pink. Senkos was all she would fish. Unfortunately she hasn't been out in several years. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted December 26, 2017 Super User Posted December 26, 2017 Okay is that budget $100 for a rod or a combo? If that is about what you want to spend on a rod/reel combo then I would suggest a Pflueger President 30 series reel. It is a battle tested and moderately priced reel. You should easily find it for less than $55. For a rod to complement that, I would look at Bass Pro Shops or online to find a Berkley Lightning Shock rod 6 foot medium action rod. It is a very good all purpose rod that handles baits from 1/8 to 3/4. My wife and I fish rods that cost up to $300 and yet we both fish with a Lightning Shock rod. If that budget was for just a rod, then I would look at a place like Tackle Warehouse and order a Dobyns Fury 6'6 medium 3/16 to 5/8 spinning rod (it is referred to by Dobyns as a FR 663SF). That rod fishes as well as many of the $250 rods others sell. It would be very versatile for her. My wife has fished with me for decades and she is only 5 foot tall, this rod would work out for both of them. I suggest in addition to the Sencos get her throwing grubs. My wife loves to catch fish on them, and she is successful with them all over the country. I like the 5 inch Kalin Lunker grubs and the easiest way to rig them is to use a Bass Pro Shops Perfect Finesse Worm Hook. It is like one piece texas rig. here is a pic of that hook. In addition she would also fish a Skinny Dipper from Reaction Innovations on that rod. They also catch us a lot of fish everywhere we fish. Rig them on a belly weighted swimbait hook. If you add these to her arsenal I bet she loves fishing all 3 baits. 1 Quote
DropShotHotShot Posted December 26, 2017 Author Posted December 26, 2017 Thanks for the response. I should say my wife is already a good stick, she has caught plenty of 4+ lb bass (impressive for MN). We are signed up to fish a club series next year. the reason I want a rod for her is because my gear is a bit big for her, and would like her to have a rod that is hers. I already picked her up a 2500 Daiwa RG-AB Spinning Reel to pair it with. I will check out the Dobyns, anyone else have any suggestions? Quote

I like St. Croix Premier ML rods - fine for bass as their brand is a tad stiffer in ML than other brands. Will be closer to the $120 range, though, but still "in range" of $100 I'd have recommended BPS Carbonlite, as they were right at the $100 mark and often on sale. The new ones are $120 and I've not used or felt them yet. Quote
PatrickKnight Posted December 27, 2017 Posted December 27, 2017 https://www.amazon.com/Daiwa-Tatula-Spinning-7-Feet-Medium/dp/B00FPQU02M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1514376033&sr=8-2&keywords=daiwa%2Btatula%2Brod&th=1&psc=1 That rod will fish right along side my Dobyns Sierra (703) as far as sensitivity and will be a good bit better than the Fury line. The only thing I don't care for is the really fast action as I like a bit more of a moderate action to my rods. Quote

Super User DogBone_384 Posted January 6, 2018 Super User Posted January 6, 2018 I’ll toss a 7’ M/F Abu Garcia Veritas into the fray. Abus tend to fish a little heavier than their rating. My Kistlers and Fenwicks agree... My Veritas get the most use of all my rods. Their customer service is top notch. Quote
