Like many of us, we're going to get gift cards to the major retailers this season. Well I got some for BPS and I want to get a setup for Yellow Perch, White Perch, possibly Crappie etc.

Can someone throw some suggestions that arent too expensive? I dont know if I should go L or UL... Im kind of reluctant to get an UL as Im afriad it'll be too whippy...? Also I'll be bank fishing/wading while using this setup..

Thanks guys!

I'd go light, personally. Though UL would be fun, too.

What's your budget? BPS MicroLite rods are very nice

and quite reasonable price-wise. I've got a couple and

was pleasantly surprised at how nice for the price.

I have a 6'6" L/F Microlite with a Pflueger President under it. I love it for light baits.

I think I paid less than $100 for the rig.

Thanks guys.. The Micro lite rod is this one:

http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-glass-spinning-rod

or this one:

http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-graphite-spinning-rod

They also have this setup on sale: http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-elite-rod-and-reel-spinning-combo

Questions:

What rod?

If I were to get another President, should I go to a 20 , 25 or 30 series?

Line choice?

What do ya'll think?

Go graphite. More sensitive, less noodly.

President? Probably a 20 for me. I do like smaller,

lighter reels, but if you go with a longer rod and

want a better balance, you may opt for a larger

reel like a 25 or 30. All of them will have more than

enough capability to handle a large bass.

Thanks. Yeah using the 30 series on the avid-x's for the bass setups now.

Id go for a 6-6.5' rod... I guess as long as the reviews are good on the website, should I just go with that>?

I have a 6' and a 5'6" and the Stradic 1000 balances well

on them. I'd think a 2000 would be great.

Great I guess President 20 it is then.

Do all of the St.Croix rods lean on the heavier side of things in terms of rod weight? In this case, if I were to go with the St.Croix Panfish rod in light, should I go to the UL setup as it'll be more-so a lighter light setup? ( again keeping in mind that S.C. leans towards heavier weights than whats listed? )

Lastly should I have a fast action or go slower for the light light jigs Id be using ( talking 1/32 )

My personal feeling on the St. Croix rods I own is that

they all tend toward tip-heaviness. I was surprised by

that when I got my 6'3" MLXF Avid, replaced/upgraded

to a 6'3" MLXF LT Walleye MLXF.

The BPS Micro Lites are quite nice rods and balance a bit

lighter in the tips than my St. Croix.

Thanks. Sorry, but what does the ML BPS balance have to do with the tips? So you mean the tips are a bit softer/lighter than St.croix?

http://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-micro-lite-graphite-spinning-rod

That's the ML rod, correct?

Does a lighter rod give you more sensitivity by any chance? Should I go 6-7' or maybe 5.5-6'?

Yes, that's the rod series I'm talking about. Sorry if below

is too long-winded.

Balance is subjective. What I meant above is how the rod

balances when you have a reel attached, and in this instance,

assume no lure is on the end. Just the rod, reel (and line

spooled on).

When you hold the setup with your hand (loosely) on it as you

would when you cast, reel, work the bait, does it balance

horizontally? Does the tip fall to the floor, or does it raise slightly,

or too much? And so forth. Can also find the balance point by

simply balancing the setup on one finger. Is balance point close to

reel, above handle, etc....

So when I talk tips, for me, I'm not talking softness as in Extra

Fast, Fast, Moderate, or noodly. I'm talking balance as described

above. St. Croix, with my 1000 Stradics, usually tend to be tip-heavy.

I.e., tip falls toward floor. The BPS stick tends to be a tad more

tip-neutral (i.e., horizontal) to tip-light depending on the length.

I personally prefer tip-light. Some like tip-heavy. That's why it is

subjective. As for length, that's up to you. Shore-bound/wading

you may want a longer rod 6'6" to 7' to reach areas you can't get

to. I prefer shorter rods, and I am in my kayak 95% of the time,

and just like them better than longer rods. Simply my preference.

In terms of tip speed, I like Fast and Extra Fast for single-hook

setups. Hook setting is nice and crisp.

Sensitivity? In the hands of the rod holder. I was surprised at the

MicroLite's sensitivity. On par with the Avid, LTs? Close, in my hands.

Materials used are lesser quality, but again...subjective.

Thanks Darren. I just got back from BPS and they didnt have much. but I was able to have the BPS Microlite setup in hand and a St.croix Premier. Granted its USA made but has only a 5yr warranty. The BPS has only a 1 year... So If it were to break within that 5 years and then Id get another one, Id be at the price of the St.Croix.

The S.C rod did feel a bit more softer and whippy in the L/F setup compared to the exact same things but in the BPS MicroLite. The M.L. rod felt a bit stiffer, Id assume thats in the blank?

Is the St.Croix Premier a good rod versus the BPS Microlite? I have Avid-X's now but they dont make that in a  L setup. So I can get the Premier, not spend as much as the Avid line up and have a 5yr warranty.

Opinion?

I actually really like the Premier spinning lineup -- in the

shorter and ML range. Probably one of, if not my fav spinning

rod.

It's a 6' model that I shortened to 5'9". Almost perfect :) And

yes, I'd rank it above the MicroLite....

Darren I got a little out of control just now. Ended up with naother Avid in L and F 6.5' and a president 6925

The L rod did feel whippy to me compared to the M that I use, but I guess thats to be expected since its a L rod...

haha I tried to contmeplate that the life time warranty was worth the extra money. And it seems that rods that are in the L power end of the spectrum can break more easily. So all in all that made the decision easier. Although as I said the L St.Croix felt way more whippy than the MicroLite from BPS.

Do you think the St.Croix will feel better once Im fishing it?

Really no idea as I've not used a Light powered Croix.

I have a Light MicroLite - 5'6" travel rod that is much

more like a Medium Light (probably because of the

ferrules for putting rod together.

I do understand the allure of a lifetime warranty, tho.

Interesting.. that also drove me away a bit from the MicroLite was the fact that they don't make a 1 piece 6'6" rod, only 6'. The 6'6" is a two piece...
