I've been messing with lines a lot lately, probably to much.

Lately I been wondering if a mono leader would be the better option to go with over a fluorocarbon leader.

Mono has come a long ways since I was a kid, and the whole visibility of mono vs fluoro is crap IMO,

I have done water tests and can see both the same.

For a given cross sectional diameter a high quality nylon material has appreciably higher break strength than Fluorocarbon.
Knot strength, tensile strength, shock strength.
Now I'm not talking about cheap mono like eagle claw from walmart, I'm talking about mono like suffix elite mono.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you answered your own question. I use a copoly leader, just for a bit of a shock absorber. I could care less about stretch, visibility, or what "pro" is telling me I should be using

It all boils down to personnel preference.  I like the non-stretch qualities.....on shorter leaders attached to braid their is probably not much difference or significance.  Looks like your finding what works for you.

If you are going to use fluoro as a leader, use LEADER, not reel fill.  The difference is incomparable.  Otherwise, it probably doesn't matter much.  In general, I avoid leaders when I can.  Mostly because I don't like passing knots through the guides, and I'm lazy.  I'm fine with all the knots, and not worried about stretch, knot failure, etc.  If the knots on my salmon/steelhead float rigs (there's 4-5 knots) hold up, then they're fine for bass.  As far as good mono goes, I've really taken a liking to Seaguar Rippin'.  Previously, I liked the Suffix lines and Siglon F.

I started out buying flouro leader line  but now I use what's left of flouro main line. Flouro leader line is more abrasion resistant but I would rather save the money and use flouro main line instead. I try to watch my spending and the extra money for leader line can go in other places. I use mono main line as a leader for topwater lures.

The abrasion factor is the main reason I use fluoro.  The zebes and quagga mussels are brutal up here.

I haven't used mono in years, but I did put some 8lb

Trilene XL on as a leader the other day for fun since I

found a spool in a storage container.

Didn't stay on though. For me it is between copoly and

Gamma Edge fluorocarbon. While I agree with @J Francho

true leader line is best, I prefer to use "regular" fluoro

spools as it is much more cost effective (for me). The

waters I fish don't suffer from the zebra mussel scourge,

and aren't too rocky, either.

As far as breaking strength, Yo Zuri Hybrid is pretty darn

hard to beat by my experience. I've found the Gamma

Edge to be pretty good, too, compared to the small sample

of other fluorocarbon lines I've used. Will probably stick

with YZH and Gamma for the foreseeable future.

I thought FC was s high abrasion resistant line based on it's hard surface, wrong! There are a few FC lines formulated to be more abrasion resistant than standard FC.

The pro's I know that fish lake Mead no longer use FC for bottom contact presentations because of loosing bass from line cuts from quagga mussels, preferring higher abrasion resistant mono.

Differences of opinions.

Christy won the Elite event on St Clair using 10 lb Sunline Sniper catching big smallmouth on bottom contact tubes and Sniper isn't a hard FC. Pros and cons.

I prefer floro over everything else (unless its a top water presentation), I just seem to catch more fish with it. My second choice is braid with a floro leader. I do like co-polymer also. To me all of these are a better option than mono but that's just me.

I go back and forth on the whole leader issue. Since I haven't been wading creeks lately most of my fishing doesn't involve abrasion issues.  That said, I got cut off of about a three pounder on 30 lb. Smackdown. No knot failure, just mouth abrasion I believe because the line is so soft. A good hard mono leader gives a bit of peace of mind but on the flip side it's nice not having to think about your terminal knots failing.

I kind of doubt that, unless it was really light line, and really worn.

Two points well made.  I get lazy checking braid and 30 lb. Smackdown is real thin, closer to other's 15. I had this particular lure ( a #5 Rippin' Rap) on for several fish. The line was clearly fuzzed at the break.

I do the same with fluro spools....has worked for years...probably too old to change!!

I have switched over to Mono for leaders and have seen zero difference in fish caught but have seen a huge difference in money spent. All my rods are braid main line.
