X3 on the President. I have a 6' 10" Fenwick Elite Tech ML/XF with said President.  It's got a nice soft tip.

I toss 1/10 Ned-heads with it using 6 pound P-Line easy as pie.

Go out and handle as many brands as you can though. There's the subjective part known as 'this rod just feels right' to me factor.

Best of luck!

That is pretty much the ultralight lure weight range.

What type of lures did you plan on tossing?

I have a 7' Okuma celilo that is one of my most used and loved rods that was about $20 back in the day on sale. It is capable of casting baits in that lure range. I think that model is now about $50 or less these days. You can then splurge on the reel of your choice.

With your budget however, I think Loomis has an ultra light rod somewhere in their line up that might be worth looking into.

My neighbor had one and it was an awesome rod but someone got into his boat and stole it and a lot of other stuff.

Update: scratch the loomis recommendation. $295 at BPS!

It definitely look at cheaper rods. Be nice to have around 100$ in a rod and reel. Any suggestions on a cheaper rod on throw light tackle? I be using little frogs lite TRD's the little ones.

Never heard of that rod so I did a little research.  Prices ran from $23 to $50.  Most reviews were good.  They seem to often be categorized as trout rods.  Looks to be a low cost option.

OP.  Look at the Fenwick River Runner.  There is a thread on TT with several posters commenting on the various lengths.  I'd leave a link, but pretty sure we are not allowed to link to that website.

I would classify it as a trout/pan fish rod but I can tell you that as long as the cover isn't heavy (and I probably wouldn't use it in heavy cover), this rod plays out and handily subdues bigger largemouth and smallmouth bass too. If I recall, I found it in a bargain bin priced at about $35 and discounted to $19.  It's one of the best steals of a deals I ever came across and I usually have a 2000 (20 rapala 6xi or something like that) Abu G cardinal (I think it's about a 1000 size) or 2500 (symetre) spinning reel on it.

I highly suggest a Lews Mach speed stick, fro TW.

79.99. A 6FT7IN, M/L, 1/16--1/4oz.

I have the president 6920 on it with 10lb braid on one set up

and 15lb braid on the other.

You guys are all assuming that he wants to go with a spinning combo.

For Baitcasting I would recommend something like a used Aldebaran BFS + used Major Craft Belkei. Probably gonna be a bit more than 250 USD though...

I have several BC rigs that easily throw light lures. True, my new spinning rig, Ci4+ and Falcon rod will bomb the stuff a country mile. But what is distance without accuracy and spinning rigs just do not get that for me. My little Daiwa reels, circa 1982, will also bomb the light Ned Rigs and weightless worms a country kilometer and with much more accuracy doing  so. Much more so.

Of course, I grew up with bait casters, so I am biased. And just learning spinning. But between dealing with the bail and line wrapping all over the place and the tangling, well, to be kind, I can see their place, but I prefer a BC for even the light stuff.

This is definitely a good pairing, but imo you could upgrade the President to a Mitchell 308 Pro which is a noticeably smoother and lighter reel. I have both, and they've both held up well but I definitely prefer my Mitchell.

I don't even see a 2500. Can I find a rod at Cabala or bass pro

I would highly suggest you go to either or both of those

stores, look at rods and reels they have in stock. Pick some

that catch your eye, are in the lure/line weight you're after,

and in your price range.

Same with reels. This forum will be all over the place as we

all have our favorites, and so forth. As has been mentioned,

Pflueger, Lews are two. I prefer Shimano Stradics. Daiwa

also makes some excellent reels. I also use reels in the 1000

size for all my bass fishing. That size is capable of super light

and heavier lines.

As for rods, both Cabelas and BPS have house brands that

are of good quality in addition to numerous other brands

that also have loyal followings.

Further, both stores will offer combos - so say you find a rod

you like, ask them if there is a combo deal with a particular

reel you like.

And they'll let you try reels on rods. You can then get a sense

of how each feels in your hands. Hope this is helpful.

Line type and size tends to dictate the rod and reel size, lure weight, hook type and air resistance to casting tends to help choose power, action and length.

If you are asking about bass finesse fishing and casting soft plastics then that would be easier to suggest rod and reel to use.

Ultra light is very restrictive, light and med light are more common with finesse bass fishing. Spinning would be my 1st choice and size 1000 will handle 4 lb to 7 lb mono/FC and braid of similar diameters. Fast action 6' to 7' 1 or 2 power spinning rods are a good combination.

I agree with you. I have a ml casting rod on a curado 100b that gets the job done well. I rarely use a spinning rod.

My nephew has a eclipse rod that you can take one finger and make it touch end to end and cast a acre. We can throw the same thing and he'll get his twice as far as me.

The standard size bass reel is a 2500.  I dont buy that size most of the time for several reason.  1. I can find great deals on high end reels on the smaller sizes.  2.  if your going for a light action rod the larger reel ways a ton.

I would look around in the used market.  I just picked up an original fuego 2000 for 115 dollars shipped.  Pair that with the elite tech bass 610mlxf and some 6lb yhb and the combo would be almost impossible to beat for twice that amount.  The daiwa advantage, sol, fuego were all high quality reels that are not matched in the current lineup.  One that is missed a lot is the daiwa tierra.  It was a great spinner and can be found at a deal...

Dont know how low this guy would go but might be worth a try.

This would also make a good rod for a total below 200 toss in some line

I like to hunt for deals and this was a quick search to meet your requirements all quality products that i do or would use.  The used market will save you a pile of money if you dont mind that.  The internet will also give you much higher value than the local store.  I shop tacklewarehouse a ton so give them a peak...

Thanks for all the help really appreciate it. What is M/L XF. Like what's extra fast do compare to slow. What's all this M,L, fast stuff mean?

  • Super User

M is medium power.

Ml is medium light power.

How powerful a rod is kids like talking horsepower.

Xf is extra fast speed.  This is how fast the blank loads to the backbone.  This is like torque.  How fast do you want to get there.

Moderate or regular is a speed or taper where the entire blank flexes.  These blanks are good for crankbaits and things with treble hooks. This is your slow but we don't call it that.
