Fishing Buddy Excuses

My fishing partner's excuse as to why I keep out doing him on the water and the bank is because I have better equipment. This had me laughing hysterically. I have 4 set ups right now and my 5th set up is under construction due to the rod being warranteed. I mainly use 2 of the set ups and my partner has 3 set ups. Does anybody else have a fishing buddy that tried to use this excuse? What other excuses do you guys get from your fishing buddies?

Oh god I had a buddy who ask me why he never catches anything. So I went out with him a couple times. He would throw a bait once or twice and if he didn't get bit he would change it .. he must have chnGed Baits 15 times in 30 minutes. I tried to help him and he wouldn't listen.  Or he would rig up stuff in the worst way.  He tried to put a plastic worm on a hook all balled up like it was a real worm.. or when you give advice and they say ok got it and then proceed to do the exact opposite you say

One of my buddies used to say it was because I was running the trolling motor so I was getting first shot at the fish. While this might be partially true, the wind always blows here, so a lot of times I'm fighting the wind with the motor while I'm trying to fish. I offered him the trolling motor one windy day so I could sit in the back and do nothing except concentrate on fishing. I think he understood much better what I was talking about it not being as much an advantage as he believed after that day.

I can't let that happen as a guide.    My whole job is to put someone in the back on fish.  The deal is usually your skill as a fisherman.  There's so much more that goes into any lure than just throwing it out and reeling it in.  Some subtle things and some very obvious.  Pausing or varying the speed of a crankbait or spinnerbait, hopping a jig or dragging it, cadence in a topwater bait and last but not least even the bait that most fishermen like to call the "idiot bait"....the Senko.  I have thrown Senkos for 20+ years and can make them work in most any situation.  There's sooooo many things you can do to a 5 inch, Texas rigged Senko besides just throwing it out, letting it sink and reeling it in.  Finally, if you have confidence in whatever bait you are throwing you WILL catch more fish.  If the guy in the backseat is frustrated, he's lost 1/2 the battle right out of the gate.

Part of  my buddies problems is his equipment.  He will buy those $14.99 combos at walmart and wonder why he spends so much time fixing his reels on the boat or untangling the cheap mono that they put on those things. I keep telling him you get what you pay for, but he never listens.

I do agree that some anglers always need an excuse of some sort, but it seems like most of us on here are always out-fishing our buddies.  Do any of you ever end up on the short end of the stick?

I fish with my wife and she has never been wrong in her life so....

My wife's fishing partner ? will make an excuse or 2 when being out fished. 

1: He's running the TM

2: He's always taking her fish off so less fishing time for him

 

This poor excuse for a fisherman just needs to come to terms with the fact that he gets out fished by a woman who only uses Senkos and has never read a fishing magazine, watched a show, or visited Bassresource while he does on a daily basis. Sucks to be that guy!

I got big leagued 2 weeks ago. The better man won. Funny thing about that is that the fishing partner I referred to in the OP was with us.

Yeah man. My partner this year was wondering the Mr bass of Arkansas last year. So I wound up on the short side a few times. But I also outfished him a few times and also learned quite a bit.

I often  fish too close to the banks , cutting my fishing buddies off .I'm guilty of it but I cant stand fishing all that unproductive water .

Most of my buddies that struggle just fish too fast. They move locations too much, change lures too much, and when throwing finesse baits they can't stop reeling. I have to remind them constantly to slow down.

I'll give my wife advice when she asks for it.  Otherwise I just check with her to make sure she's doing OK.  When I get too preachy with her about her technique she gets defensive.  She never makes excuses.

 

My son's main excuse is I don't position the boat correctly.

The equipment CAN, at times, make a huge difference but more often than not it's when it's used inappropriately rather than the "quality."  One of my buddies sometimes fishes a frog in lilly pads with an ultralight spinning rod and 6 lb line.  Uhh, not gonna work.  Oh, he'll get plenty of strikes but hook few fish and bring even fewer in.

 

I stopped using spin cast equipment years ago because there are inherent limitations of the design.  But nevertheless, a really GOOD fisherman using it could still way outfish me using even the best gear. Then again, at that point it's probably because he/she has found the fish while I'm still spinning my wheels.

Don't let those excuses get to you.  Life's too short to worry about others.  Took me a long to time learn....hard to do.  My solution is to fish alone

 

I do fish with my wife, however, but my mission when she's in the boat is primarily to put her on fish.  She doesn't make excuses ever.

I don’t compete when I fish with anyone. I like to see everyone catch fish. That keeps them hooked in this sport. I do stop to help the kids near me catch fish too. I give back what I can.

I always try to put my buddies on fish by suggesting spots to hit, techniques to use, or baits to switch too.  Sometimes all the help is for nothing.  They just don't get it!!!!!!!!

Lol, I honestly can't find a fishing buddy. Most of my friends who "fish" are extremely casual anglers (3-5) trips a year total and the endless string of no's finally had me quit asking. If I'm not with my 6 & 2yo daughters then I'm fishing alone.

 

Moving to the Jacksonville FL area next year and should be able to hook up with some quality anglers.

There are so many different techniques to bass fish with,  Many times the bite just goes to a technique you or your buddy is better at.  Usually, people have techniques they are comfortable with and that's what they want to fish.

I was stationed there in the military for 4 years and recruited for 3 years out of Palatka just south of there.  You are moving to an area that has some of the best bass fishing in the world.  There are numerous bass clubs there, not only will the club introduce you to a lot of other anglers but will help you learn the area.  Whether you own a boat or not, a bass club is a great way to go when moving to a new area.

That fishing bud stuff went out the window years ago. When I tell you to be at the boat ramp at 4:45 am that doesn't mean 5:00, 5:15, 5:30...........sorry dude I like you and all but we ain't meant to fish together. Solo I only have to be concerned with myself.

I usually fish alone simply because I dislike most humans. But I have one buddy that routinely outfishes me. So I might be that buddy to him. But I never make excuses. It's only a fish, right? Right? But I have another buddy that's extremely competitive in everything. He doesn't fish nearly as often as I so I usually whoop him. I can catch a new PB, but if he catches one more tiny fish of a mixed bag than I caught bass he loudly proclaims victory.
