Junger Posted August 15, 2017 Posted August 15, 2017 Hey everyone, my name is Tom. I have a renewed interest in fishing a couple years ago (I'm 41 now), after taking my dad out on a snakehead fishing trip for his birthday. I grew up mostly panfishing from the bank, but lost interest in my teen years as I got into sports seriously and none of my friends fished, so neither did I. I'm now addicted to topwater action after using frogs and poppers to get SH, which I got my first last year. I have 2 young boys (4 and 7) that I'm starting to get into fishing, right now it's just a worm and bobber on a push button rod. But I want to be able to take them bass or SH fishing one day, and knowledgeably teach them the techniques and use the right tackle. So now as I'm investing more time and resources into fishing, I'm trying to learn as much as I can. 3 Quote

Super User fishwizzard Posted August 15, 2017 Super User Posted August 15, 2017 Welcome. If you are in Potomac MD then you are in a great spot for bass fishing. You have access to some great smallmouth spots (the Potomac and it's tribs) and some good to great largemouth spots (the canal and Clopper/Seneca Lakes). Quote

I used to go clamming up in Dickerson as a kid, and I remember throwing little jigs with spinners and get some dink smallmouths in a lot of current, it was a lot of fun though. I run along the C&O frequently between Angler's and Great Falls park, some of those pools look fishable, but it just doesn't seem like there's fish in there...I maybe see a few bluegill but that's it, and it seems like the locks prevent movement between the pools. I'll probably try one day if I can get out there not on a weekend. In the near term, I'm going to buy an electric trolling motor and rent boats at Seneca and Blackhills to start learning those bodies of water. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted August 15, 2017 Super User Posted August 15, 2017 Spending time on the water is the best way to learn, but we have a VERY extensive library and a huge selection of instructional videos. Here is one to start with: https://www.bassresource.com/how-to-fish/ Welcome aboard! Quote

Go back in the MD thread maybe two years and start looking for posts by "FriedLemons". That dude has pulled some amazing bass out of the canal. It is one of my favorite spots to fish, but I live far enough away that I hate taking the gamble to drive out there without knowing the water level. Quote

I'm about 15 minutes away from there off Falls Chapel Road. What do you think about live-lining bluegill there? My local pond has hundreds and hundreds of stunted bite size bluegills. Quote
