Super User tcbass Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 Need a spinning rod for largemouth bass for my bro. Use it for things like throwing Senkos and Flukes. I want to pair it with a Shimano Stradic Ci4 2500. I know that Gander Mountain only carries certain brands. With their going out of business sale I was wondering if I could pick up a rod for 30-50% off right now. *** Not looking at Gander Mountain brand. Looking at all others such as St. Croix and Shimano, etc. What would be the best spinning rod brand and model for this from Gander Mountain in the $140-$210 range before sale? Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 Personally, I would forget getting anything from Gander Mountain just because there will be no help if a problem occurs. I have seen this happen recently and the member here was not too happy. With your budget I would look at Tackle Warehouse. Take a look at a Dobyns Fury or Sierra series rod. The same model rod is available in both series, so I would consider something like a SA 693 Sf, SA 703 SF, or a Fury 703 SF. The Fury rod will run $110. The Sierra rods will run between $159 and $169. These rods fish extremely well. Quote
Super User NHBull Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 My buddy has that real on an e6x that he paid 149.00 on sale and is very happy with it Quote
Super User Angry John Posted June 20, 2017 Super User Posted June 20, 2017 For that money i would be into a st croix medium xfast. I just ordered one for my son. Cant give experience on that rod but the many avid's i have are wonderful. I like the avid x for spinning and the regular avid for casting. If you have any problems ever st croix have some of the best warranty support around Quote

CTBassin860 Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 All 3 have SCIII graphite.Avid had Fuji Alconite guides and reel seat and weighs 4.2oz.Avid X had Kigan guides and Fuji reel seat, comes in at 3.8oz.The Mojo Bass has Kigan guides and Fuji reel seat, weighs 3.8oz.The Avid costs more than the Mojo, but i havent fished it to say its better. If it were me picking between the 3 based on simple specs,it would come down to,are the alconites worth the extra 60 for the Avid? The weight reduction would make me take the Avid X over the Avid, and the similar components between the X and the Mojo, would make me go with the Mojo for 60 bucks cheaper.Just my 2 cents though. frosty Posted June 20, 2017 Posted June 20, 2017 I throw in my opinion for something completely different, a fenwick hmg. I have a 7' medium heavy, that I can easily make a good cast with a weightless senko and it has a lifetime warranty, all for $99 on tackle warehouse. Edit, I forgot you were looking for a spinning rod. There's an hmg for sale in the flea market right now. Quote

Avid X is a newer updated Avid but not necessarily better. But yes you want to pick one of those 2 in that price range. Quote
Super User Further North Posted June 21, 2017 Super User Posted June 21, 2017 Bought an Avid X from Gander for $140 not long ago. It's my dedicated Senko rod and with an Abu Garcia LTX, line and everything, the whole rig weighs 9.6 ounces. It gets all the way to 10 ounces with a hook and Senko on it. St. Croix will cover the rod, you don't have to worry about Gander... 1 Quote
LxVE Bassin Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 Get a St Croix Mojo Bass or Bass X rod that medium powered with a fast or X fast tip. Gander is going out of business so there may be a deal. Don't get anythinb Gander Mountain brand because there will be no warranty on the item. Quote

Super User WRB Posted June 21, 2017 Super User Posted June 21, 2017 You all realize GM is going out of business, files bankruptcy in May 2017 for the majority of their stores outside of Texas. Tom Quote
PECo Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 My favorite spinning rod is a seven foot Shimano Crucial. It has a split grip and the rod blank is exposed under your hand through the reel seat. Shimano's Express Warranty Service would replace it for fifty percent of MSRP if it were to break. Quote

Tom Yup. Mentioned in the original post. Not sure why that matters? Their assets have been purchased by Camping World/Good Sam. Quote

Only issue will be GM brands, the new owners may not honor fishing tackle returns on clearence sale because they are no longer in that business. Tom Quote

Thanks Tom, - you're exactly right. Hard to tell where the new owners will take the business. Seems to me it'd be an odd choice to buy "the brand" and not take advantage of the established market, but that might not be their goal. There was a "letter" on the website stating they hope to keep 70 stores open, not sure about which ones. I think that's a good move, mostly because I think the reason they went belly up is that they expanded too fast... Quote
Stasher1 Posted June 21, 2017 Posted June 21, 2017 It's my understanding that the current "sale" inventory actually belongs to a liquidator, not Gander Mountain. That's why they (GM) won't warranty them and won't accept returns. I have have also read in numerous places that the prices on these "clearance" goods are basically full MSRP, or very close to it. Correct on the liquidator. I wouldn't buy GM brand even before they were going out of business. I know St. Croix and Shimano make good stuff, I'll look at that Avid. Quote

Not from what I have seen. See above reference to Avid X price, bought them out of Senkos in the colors I use the third week of the sale at less than I normally pay...bought some fishing pants at half what they used to be, and got a Shimano Curado for lots less than they sell for anywhere else... I would suggest upping another $20 if you can and get a St. Croix Legend Tournament rod - if they carry them. I like my 6'3" MLXF Legend Tournament Walleye rod (identical to the Bass series, they just didn't offer the length I wanted in it). Great for senkos, etc. Quote
Super User Further North Posted June 22, 2017 Super User Posted June 22, 2017 Most of the rods in the range of the St. Croix Legend Tournament quality/price range are already gone. The best ones I saw at our local Gander a couple weeks ago were Kistler. Not sure why they were still there...might be that the locals don't know what they are... Quote
