Whopper Plopper anyone's favorite Topwater Lure?

I love using topwaters. I like buzzbaits a lot, however, I get the best blowups from a Zaraspook type lure, specifically KVD Sexy Dawgs, which are my favorite topwater lure because of that and how far it casts. I have Whopper Ploppers in 90 and 130, I am going to try to get some 110's. I haven't actually used them yet, hopefully this summer when I first go out.

 

The Whopper Plopper seems to have a following on here. I was wondering if it is anyone's favorite topwater lure?

I liked the 90 size and had some great blowups. I did not get a chance to use my 130's, but just ordered a 110 yesterday. In the ponds I fish it works really well. 

 

It is the only top water lure I used last year, but I want to try out some others especially frogs this year.

The Whopper Plopper is my current "go to" topwater bait and usually always the very first lure I'll throw as the sun is coming up. I primarily use the 130 but have recently ordered a couple of the 110's for my lighter setups. 

 

Prior to the Whopper Plopper, the Arbogast Jitterbug was my favorite topwater. The WP by far gets the most aggressive strikes I've seen on a topwater bait, although, the Jackall Pompadour is a very close 2nd!

I like the 110, it has actually worked for me unlike the 90.

 

While I enjoy the productivity of the WP, it's not even close to my favorite top water lures. It is just a cast it out and burn it in type of lure.

 

I enjoy frogging and walking spooks/poppers much more. My favorite top water lure at the moment though is the Megabass Siglett. It has done really well for me on farm ponds. It looks like a huge horse/bot fly and it retrieves like a jitterbug. I've had the most luck slow twitching it and pausing.

Nope...  i like them and fish them regulary but the good ol Zara Spook (in all its sizes) is still my all time favorite topwater lure followed closely by a hollow body frog...

I would not say it is my favorite but it is very fun to fish.  I throw mostly the 130 and have done very well with it.  i have a few of the 90 size but rarely use them, I just don't get the same results with the way I fish them.

I don't even have one. I've put it in the cart several times, but found another lure like the SPRO Rat, Chug Bug, Spook Jr or Chug'n Spook to replace it. I'm sure it works though. There are too many people on YouTube having success with it to be a fluke, pun intended.

Not my favorite, thats a tie between the Sammy 85 in MS American shad, discontinued rapala xwalk 14 in glass ghost, or a 3/8 or 1/2oz black buzzbait. But they do have a place. Great for covering water, can be absolutely bombed, and arent as hard on the wrists as a dog walking bait... theyre kind of like the rattle trap of topwaters.

 

They aren't quite as versatile as a buzzbait due to fouling/snagging in cover and the dramatic splash that can be detrimental at times.

I have a WP in multiple sizes but haven't used it much yet (mostly because I recently bought them this past off season), so I don't have the credibility to state whether or not they are my favorite topwater lure yet.  I"ll stick with a hollow body frog for now, as it has been a bass producer for me the better part of the last decade.

Here in MA the colors that seem to do very well for me are perch, trout, and bluegill so I bought all those colors. I also bought the Loon for night fishing. 

 

I've had success slow reeling, pause & go reeling, and burning them in... the cadence varies depending on the season and waters being fished. 

 

My favorite bite is topwater so I've tried many lures over the year. The excitement of a lunker exploding on the Whopper Plopper is second to none! There have been many days I've caught 10-15 fish on it alone.

I won't put it ahead of a frog but I will put it second. I had one tied on almost all of last summer and had some great days on it.

If you are fishing fairly clear water I suggest a translucent colored WP. I have both the terminator and loon color and in my experience the terminator color gets strikes in clear water when the black on does not.

 

I do like the whopper plopper but I sometime have issues with it staying on the surface and have to adjust my retrieve accordingly. I ordered the 110 and I hope it solves the issue. My favorite topwater by far though is the Ima Skimmer. It has outproduced any other and I enjoy the technique of the retrieve. I strongly suggest replacing the tail hook with a small single hook as it improves the balance for walking the lure. Even with just the one treble hook in the middle I rarely have missed strikes.

Two weeks ago I tried the Whopper Plopper for the first time. I used the WP 90 in the Loon pattern. I was casting from a small point on shore out past a small patch of standing "reeds" at dusk.  There was a breeze and slight surface chop.  I used a steady retrieve.  The results were interesting. In a half hour I caught five bass. That's the good news. The bad news is that the largest was 10 inches.  I figure to catch a respectable bass I have to wait for the Whopper Plopper 250 to be developed.  Gotta admit those little dinks smacked the whoop out of it. One that I missed actually knocked the lure up into the air. And when I set the hook on the smallest one, I came within inches of having really fresh sushi for supper. But dang! It was a blast.

I have had good luck with the 90 in loon, fishing it every which way.  Has worked great twitched in nearly complete darkness though my cardiologist might beg to differ.

 

I still love the deep "bloop" of a Pop R and like to keep busy walking just about anything that wants to walk.  Buzzbaits still perform great right alongside the WP for me.  Of all lures, my top producing topwater is a craw with big arms retrieved on surface.

 

Picking one over the others is just not applicable for me.

Is it the 90 size? Same thing happened with me. I bought a couple size 90s and they don't "plop" very well. I've heard of a lot of people that had the same issue.

Feed the addiction and buy the 110.

 

It is a much better design.

snake95: I gotta be honest. I plan on fishing the Whopper Plopper a lot more. Water here in MA was still chilly and I'm guessing I just hit a school of pups that gravitated toward the warmer shallows.  I do want to pick up a couple of 110's and/or 130's for morning and evening fishing.  While I love the Zara Spook and the Devil's Horse, I really stink at walking the dog from a sit-in kayak. (Mebbe if I used my old 5'6" trigger grip I'd do better.) So I'm gonna play with this guy more. Definitely a fun lure!

I was really excited to try my 130's I bought.   I finally tried them last weekend and was frustrated.   The bait was rolling in the water.  It plopped, but was also rolling at times.  It twisted up my line even.  I have to give it more time, but was not initially impressed.

Can't say that I own one, simply because my go to topwaters up here are the Rapala Skitter Pop and the Strike King Sexy Dawg Jr. After those two it's all about the Spro Bronzeye family....

Depends on what I'm fishing for.  If I'm in a lake and fishing for largemouth it's a great lure.  If I'm in a river fishing for smallmouth it seems the walk the dog type lures work better for me.  I've caught a couple smallies on the WP but I've caught more largemouth on lakes with it.
