I understand that I can Google tons of knots but I would like to see what a larger amount of people use. I've only been using what I believe is called a clinch knot and I'm guessing the most basic one.

You should be a little more specific.  Is it braid , FC or mono and are you interested in just at the terminal end or joining lines.

Lucky for you, if you want to keep it simple learn the uni knot.  Then the double uni makes sense for joining lines.  The improved uni is a step up for terminal tackle......

After mastering that, you can expand to the polamar, San Diego and such, but the Uni will suit all your needs.

lately I have been doubling the line and tying the uni with bigger baits.

Mono - Trilene knot

Fluoro - SD Jam for almost everything, Palomar for worm hooks

Braid - Palomar most of the time, Trilene for certain applications

Leader knot - Alberto or Seaguar knot

Double Uni (AKA Fishin Fool) won knot wars a few years ago. Works for all line types. I switched to it back then from the Palomar which it beats.

Palomar for single hooks

Pitzen (also know as 16/20 and Duncan knot) for treble hooks

Alberto for leaders

I have never had trouble with a variety of knots, but this is my advise to everyone:

"If it ain't perfect, it ain't good enough."

re:  the double uni.  I must be tying it wrong.  The two lines hold at the knot but I can slide the two knots apart, more like a jam knot that only works in one direction.

Anyone else have this problem?

If you can slide the two apart you are tying it properly, you just didn't cut the tags close enough ...it is a jam knot

Is there any con to using SD Jam on everything? I've seen it recommended mostly for fluoro.

After my first inshore trip, I'm trying to optimize my knot strength...

I use alberto for leaders, palomar for braid, and sd jam for everything else.

I wise man on here (I forget which) suggested that the type of knot you use really isn't nearly as important as many would make it out to be.  Far more important is picking one (or more) of the perfectly acceptable ones, and learning to tie it well.  Every time.

Not at all, just use 10 wraps for braid

I use the uni for tying hooks, sometimes palomar.

Line-to-leader uni-to-uni 95% of the time. Alberto

the rest.

The clinch knot is good, the Trilene knot is similar with double loop through the hook eye.

Monofilament or mono is a forgiving line and several knots work very good, tie the one you can tie best. The Palomar knot is easy for hooks and clips and like any knot you need to wet the line before pulling the tag end of the line tight. If you are using fluorocarbon line then it's critical you wet the line and tie knots perfectly, Palomar, San Diego jam both are good. Braid, double line clinch knot works good.

Practice, practice, practice until you can tie any knot in the dark.

You guys are awesome thanks for all the info. I am using 8lb monofilament right now. My buddy has told me to get braided line as it is stronger but I am okay with the line I am using right now. I'm gonna try a few of these and see which I like best!

Braid: Uni

Fluoro/Mono: San Diego Jam (my new favorite)

Braid to Leader: FG or Alberto

The only exception is tying plain hooks for fishing plastics I'll use a Palomar sometimes.

Here too, I might change all my trilene knot to this for the sake of my old eyesight.

Though I shoot for 5-twists, if the tag-end is short I'll settle for a 4-twist uni-knot.

I'm still waiting for a 4-twist uni-knot to fail.    Any day now....aaany day    :)

I hasten to add that I don't use fluorocarbon line, so I cannot speak for fluorocarbon knots.
