We did have some water damage last year. The heat went out and the residual water in the lines did freeze. We were fortunate that the fittings that froze were right where the water lines exited the basement to the first floor. The basement is unfinished. When we turned the water on, just the cement slab in the basement got wet.

Three years ago, we were on a nice January, get out of the cold, vacation. Returned to find burst pipes in the cabin. 104,000 gallons of water entered the cabin, exiting through a crack in the floor I did not know I had. A very fortunate crack. A little simple math told me that 104,000 gallons of water was enough to fill the cabin completely, more than once. Without the crack, it would have blown out the walls, and/or collapsed the floor. Nice crack!

the real pain was paying the water bill the following month.

$854. Ouch!

An engineer from one of the school districts comes into the supply house yesterday. He tells me the village water department stopped into the school and told him there's a problem somewhere in the building, that there is excess water usage. Schools are not in session still because of covid. The engineer asks "How much? A couple hundred gallons?" The guy from the village says "No, enough to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool." After some investigation, the found a heating coil that froze and burst. There just so happened to be a floor drain below the coil. The water ran right down the drain rather than flood the building. Which is why the engineers had no clue.

This morning I got an email from a fitness equipment retailer: "The Perfect Gift for Valentine's Day Gift for Her!"

That's like saying: "Happy Valentines Day, I thought this would be perfect for you since you've put on few pounds over the years."

Nope...I really need a good night sleep.

It's 9 degrees here with a 20mph wind.  What to do?  Stay in the warm garage, get out the carpet cleaner and squeegee the fish stank out of the boat.  Can you tell that I'm bored?

When I was a teenager, we had a 200lb potbelly pig in our house that was pretty much the same. After he died, my mom got a miniature one, that was about 10lbs fully grown. He still put up almost as much of a fight as the big one when he wanted to. I certainly know where the term “pigheaded” came from.

Tradition requires an 'igloo' be constructed each winter in the 'dog yard'.

Miss Fenway is always a willing occupant.

How cold has it been? This is the ramp of one of the power plant lakes I fish. The outlet is directly across the lake where the steam is rising.

I scare those away with the bottom of my boots. They never come back after that. But they do have a nasty habit of sending reinforcements
