So I'm just getting into bass fishing, and I have been pond fishing a lot. Today was my best day so far, I caught 8 bass in three hours. I caught 2 in the deep part of the pond, and there is also a big portion that is shallow. I caught 6 in the shallow part, on senkos and brush hogs. However, I lost 2 and I missed a lot of bites. I was using a 2/0 ewg for the brush hog (baby brush hog) and a 3/0 ewg for the senkos. My hook up ratio was a lot better with the senkos though. Any thoughts on why I missed so many on the brush hog? Also, what do you guys like to fish in shallow water? (8 inches-2feet) ps: had one hit a buzzbait, missed it. It is April and i fish in PA

on the brush hog, switch to a straight shank with a snell knot and see if they helps.

Buzzbait bite in PA in April!!! That gets my blood flowing!

As for the misses on the plastics, they're likely not getting the entire thing in their mouth. If they're on beds, they may just be picking it up and moving it off the bed. In that case, they may only have an appendage in their mouth, rather than the entire bait. I know Raystown Lake was 56-60* this weekend, so it's possible they're on beds in your part of the state now.

I like to throw chatterbaits, keel weighted Keitech's, and a Mann's Baby 1- crank in that shallow water you described.

Rage Menace on a 3/0 Owner Straight Shank.  I like them a lot weightless but if I need to rip them through weeds or pads I add a 1/16oz steel weight infront. They are almost a perfect fit and act like a protective nose-cone and really prolongs the life of the plastic.

I've found EWG's to lose fish for me - I only use them with thicker plastics like toads and senkos. I gave them up a long time ago for smaller baits.

As fishballer said bass might be on beds in the shallow water not trying to actually eat the brush hog just move it. I also prefer straight shank hooks and really cross their eyes on the hook set.
