Jake Lepak Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I am somewhat new to baitcaster a and I recently purchased a Curado I. When I put line on it do cast I realized it had a very loose spool that could move side to side, adjusting the tension nob works some. But when I would want to let it spin more freely it would make lots of noise like going side to side on the sides of the spool. Is this normal? Are my bearings bad? Thank you Quote
TheRodFather Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Are you backlashing? Barring some other mechanical issue, if the spool is moving side to side the tension knob is too loose. Tighten the spool tension knob a bunch, hold the rod parallel to the ground with the lure hanging down a foot or so from the tip of the rod. Release the spool with the button on the back of the reel, the lure should hold position. Then slowly loosen the tension knob till the lure starts to drop to the ground and when the lure stops, the spool stops as well, not over running. That is a safe starting point for that particular lure, loosen or tighten to suit your style/desire to cast further, beware that less spool tension raises the likelihood of a backlash. TRF Quote
Smelter96 Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Could be that the little pads that meet the end of the spool tips are dry. Or the brake rotor on the palm side is dry and the brakes are rubbing to rough on it. Try putting a little oil on the pad under the bearing on the palm side and under the spool tension knob. And a light coating on the brass rotor on the palm side. As far as the spool moving side to side, what TheRodFather said. Quote
Guest Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 If it doesn't help when you tighten your tension knob and you just can't get it figured out take it back right away to get it replaced if that's not an option anymore than send it to get fixed it's not that expensive to send it to get looked at an serviced. DVC reel repair, threeltuninigandcleaning are some good options to send it to if you don't have a reel service guy in your area. Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I hope your tension knob is not cross-threaded. Does it move easily? Also you could be missing a washer or other part under the tension knob. Did you buy the reel new? Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 There should be zero lateral movement of the spool when properly adjusted. If not the reel is not right. If it's new enough, exchange it. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 19, 2017 Super User Posted February 19, 2017 I agree with DVC, there's no acceptable reason for end-play in a new Curado Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 19, 2017 Super User Posted February 19, 2017 The only reason why there's side to side movement on the spool is if the tension knob is not properly tightened. Quote

jitterbug127 Posted September 12, 2022 Posted September 12, 2022 I am posting here having same problem. I tighten the spool tension knob as tight as it can be tightened and spool still moves. I bought this reel new in 2017 just now using it unfortunately Quote
