Iluvsmallies Posted February 10, 2017 Posted February 10, 2017 I was going to build a jig rod and was looking at the recon 2 and ultra mbx. I was curious if any of you guys have built or used one of these blanks. Which one would you recommend for a jig rod. Thanks! Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 11, 2017 Posted February 11, 2017 If I was going Phenix I'd go right to the k2 but they're pricey. Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted February 11, 2017 Super User Posted February 11, 2017 i would get a Ultra MBX 707 H or if want a shorter blank , get the Ultra MBX 700 H . i like a faster action and in my opinion the Ultra is faster and gets to the backbone of the rod quicker . i fish mostly 3/8 & 1/2 oz. jigs plus trailer . just had a Ultra MBX 707ML built , gonna pick it up tomorrow my next rod to be built is the 707H , for jigs and big shakey heads , then a 707Mh for bladed jigs , lipless crankbaits, texas rigged plastics , etc.. in my opinion and what i like in a jig rod , the K2 blanks have a moderate fast action which i don't like . the are nice blanks but for fishing jigs in deep water , they are not for me ... Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 12, 2017 Super User Posted February 12, 2017 I would get the UMBX or K2. The Recon is a nice blank but it is the most moderate of the bunch. The K2 will be the most pricey, the lightest and the most sensitive. Quote
Hogsticker Posted February 13, 2017 Posted February 13, 2017 Umbx hands down for bottom contact. Very good blank for the money imo. K2s are not what I'd consider moderate fast, but definitely a slow fast. Very crisp and very light. Recons are closer to a moderate fast. The Umbx is plenty sensitive and a true fast. I'm kinda partial to Phenix blanks. The Point Blank blanks are very sweet too. 1 Quote

Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted March 1, 2017 Super User Posted March 1, 2017 what did you go with ??? Quote
Airman4754 Posted March 4, 2017 Posted March 4, 2017 I think I own every UMBX blank now between spinning and casting. For casting the ML blank is truly incredible. The Med and MH aren't that good in my opinion. They both feel about the same and are pretty dead. The heavy blank is really good though. I throw swim jigs on the heavy and pretty much all plastics on the ML. I drug a 7lb'er through a lilly pad field last spring with the ML so it has power. Quote

The UMBX blank is 40-ton and the Recon is 36-ton. I use the 8' MH Recon for preacher jigs and big flutter spoons. It's ok. One day I will swap it out with the Med UMBX swimbait blank. I've got the MH and H, UMBX swimbait blanks on some custom builds and they smoke the Dobyns Champion blanks, to me anyway. The 707ML UMBX casting and the NFC blank that Power Tackle uses for their football jig rod are the two best casting rods I have ever fished. Quote

The Recon Elite rods are built on the Recon 2 blanks, the same blanks that are readily available. Phenix only made some cosmetic changes to the Elite. As for the medium light umbx, it has around 440 grams of power and fishes more like a medium plus. Quote

Iluvsmallies Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 I'm going to be putting the jig rod on hold for a bit and build another finesse rod. I'm still looking at the ultra and the K2 for the build.. after seeing you guys talk about the ultra i may just pull the trigger.... I'm wanting something for ned rigs to drop shot, small hair jigs etc... was thinking 7'ml or 7m maybe longer... what do you guys think??? Got a trip to dale holllow coming up ? Quote

I've owned every high end drop shot line out there and to me, the 706M spinning blank blows all of them away. I don't like it for Ned rigs because it's a little too stiff and I don't like it for shaky heads because I think it's a little too soft. For a dedicated drop shot rod you won't touch it though. It's also a really good tube cracking rod for smallies. I had a 706MH built for shaky heads and I'm not in love with it. It's kind of stiff and dead. I've been using the 7'6"ML/XF St Croix SCV blank for Ned rigs this past month and it is such a great rod for that technique. It's a bit flimsy for anything else I fish, but it's a great blank. Quote
Hogsticker Posted March 7, 2017 Posted March 7, 2017 I think if I were to build a drop shot / light shaky head rod I'd opt for the new Eternity 610 mxf. I've read countless threads and comments stating the RX8 822.5 was the greatest drop shot blank ever made. I would imagine this new version is only an improvement. Quote
