Brought home my new Lund today

New to me that is. She rolled off the assembly line in 1970 and appears to be as structurally sound as she was 47 years ago...wish I could say the same for me. She's 14ft long and rated for an earth shattering 12hp. Came with a 2.3hp but I'm going to soup her up with a 15hp Evinrude that's even older than the Lund. I didn't look too closely at the TM or the fishfinder but I'm guessing they are close to 30 years old. Trailer has new lights, wheels/tires, and a new tongue jack. I need to figure out if I'm going to put a bow mount or transom mount TM on her. Thinking of a HB Helix 5 for locating skinny river smallmouth and walleye. With any luck I can get a few hundred for the motors to help offset the costs of the upgrades.

You joke. I'm contemplating it. It will give me a reason to upgrade to a 12 foot Talon on the Predator. The hull is rated to hold 800lbs. The 15hp weighs about 70lbs, 6 gal tank is 50lbs, battery 40 lbs. Trolling motor probably 40lbs, Talon around 30lbs. Gear weight is going to be minimal because I'm just looking for skinny water smallies, walleye and crappie. A cooler and 2 fishermen and I will be maxed out.

Nice skinny waters boat! Congrats, hope you have alot of fun using it. Looks like its already got rod holder bases, or are those oarlocks? Sweet deal anyways, with new trailer parts shouldn't be any issues there. A comfy seat up front,...think you'll "need" the other boat now?,..lol

I didn't buy it to restore, but to use for its intended purpose. That being said, I'm not going to paint it or put carpet and seats in it like so many do. If I had to guess, based on the condition, I am the 3rd owner, and the kid I bought it from bought a larger boat. Wonder how many fish were caught in it over the last 47 years or how many got away or how many "firsts", or how many stories shared.... 

and I paid less for the boat, motors and trailer than I would have buying a new 14ft jon

Having just returned from Milwaukee via Chicago, how do you deal with the traffic while pulling a boat, especially your Predator?  Granted, I was on 294 both directions three times this year but the traffic is heavy everywhere we've been in Chicago (family in Cicero).  I have a hard enough time dodging all the idiots and their lane changes with just my wife's Subaru without worrying about someone taking out my boat as well.

Whether I fish the Chicago lakefront or the smaller lakes in the north and northwest suburbs, I'm out early enough in the morning so there is no traffic. On the return trip I stay in the right lane. Unless I'm tourney fishing or fishing is exceptional, I'm normally off the water by noon or 1:00 when the pleasure boaters are just rolling up to clog the ramps.

Were it not for a stretch of river 15 minutes from my house, I would have never bought it. I used to fish this 2 mile stretch of river for smallies with my last boat and go thru a few props a year(17ft Mirrocraft and 90hp Merc). Navigation was limited and if the river was high enough to navigate safely, the current was too strong to fish, The smallies would stack up in the deep holes during the summertime and if there was enough current I could pick off 20 or more in less than an hour. I've been looking for "this" boat since I bought the Predator. I bought the motor I'm going to throw on this in 2013 but passed on the boat and trailer as they weren't up to par. The boats I've been seeing up until now have been overpriced. The rate things were going, next year I was going to finally break down and purchase new. I was bored a couple weeks ago and went thru the CL ads and I found her. A sampling of the smallmouth I will be fishing for again in the near future

Yep.  Except that I've got that river 15 minutes away...3 more inside a half hour...and another dozen within a couple hours...some amazing smallie water...and some musky rivers that have fish in 'em that will...in the words of my friend Jay..."Make you curl up on the bottom of the boat and cry"...we had five come play with us last Monday a semi-local river that will remain nameless...

...and you can't get to a lot of that water in a "regular" boat...unless it's jet powered or you sacrifice to the prop gods a half-dozen times a year.

My problem is that I fish by myself probably 90% of the time...so I can't drift a river section from one takeout to another.

Just ordered a bow and a transom mount trolling motors and a helix 5. The plan right now is to figure out how to mount 2 batteries wired in parallel underneath the middle seat with a twist lock receptacle and then put twist lock plugs on the ends of both trolling motors and I will be able to switch from the bow mount to the transom mount depending on what I'm fishing for. The Helix 5 will be at the stern.

Had a older 14' Lund my father in law brought out to me from Minnesota back in the early 70's.

Should have a few photos somewhere that shows how the boat was rigged for bass fishing.

From memory I had a 48 lb transum mount MinnKota trolling mounted up front using a bracket I made bolted to the bow aluminum plate cross wise when up and stored. Turned the tiller handle 180 to operate the motor using a auto head light on/off switch foot operated, battery in the rear.

Added carpeted floor boards to run wire under and quite sound. Up front I added a 3/4"  piece of marine plywood carpeted that was cut to fit the bow shape at about 4" below the seat height, secured it to the front seat set and a L bracket under the front of the second seat, very stable platform and removable. Added a low pedestal seat on the second seat to sit on and operate the trolling motor and rear swivel seat in the rear. Used my electronics out of my bass boat upgrades; HummingBird 60 flasher up front, Lawrance 1510 paper garage mounted on the left side of the rear second seat.

Had a Eveinrude 15hp OB, 6 gallon gas tank, added back trolling splash guards to help keep waves from going over the transum when operating the trolling motor up front. Used a Coleman 55 qt cooler with aeration pump for a livewell and dry storage when empty. The cooler set between the middle seat sideways. Added rubber rod holders on the seat braces and carpet where the reel layer on the rear seat, both sides. Had alimum shelves just above the deck running boards to hold Plano plastic tackle storage boxes on the left side, I am right handed, Easier to see and access because The tiller steering was on the left side and sat on the right side of the rear seat to run the boat. The 14' Lund with all my stuff would plane quickly and run about 18-20 mph with the 15 hp OB with I person.

Fished this boat on lots of smaller lakes and the local trophy bass lakes whenever I wanted to be under the radar and fishing on the bank near rocks etc.

Enjoy your Lund, I did for about 25 years.
