Im new here, obviously lol. I will have to say i was spoiled when it came to fishing when growing up. My dad was a huge fisher and still is but he lives and owns a boat repair shop down in Virginia along the north carolina border, Right on lake gaston/lake kerr. Anyways ive always fished from a boat, but i dont have that luxury anymore lol.I just recently picked back up on fishing and i went out to the slackwater boat ramp, or rather a little up from it right at the water fall. I couldnt get any bites, ended up losing more baits than anything. Is there a good spot to hit either small mouth or large mouth around there? I was literally 30 to 50 yards from the fall so the current was ripping through. I dont really know the area at all, and am just getting frustrated. my gf and i went to greenbrier, then hunting creek/catoctin lake. Not a single bite or any luck. tried crank baits, worms, top waters. Basically just looking for a really good place on shore to catch some fish. Also what lures/colors your using. as well as how your rigging them. Sorry for the long post lol, I was trying to find some post but nothing was definitive for what im looking for.

Hello Matt.  Were you shore fishing at Dam 4 on the Potomac River on the Maryland side?  Just trying to figure out where you were before I offer some advice...

Oh, and welcome to Bass Resource!!

Nothing at Dam 4 except catfish.  Like these.  It's best to try someplace else. ;)

Ya I was on the Maryland side, sorry for late reply. I have been busy. Ya that's what I want to catch pat those types of "catfish" lol. It's a bit of a drive so I was trying to find fish and get an idea of where and what to do to hook them; before I brought my gf and son. I was out there for roughly 4 hours. There were a few people on the rocks right next to/below the dam. They were catfishing I think. Then two other guys were bobber fishing where I had previously been and pulling out fish. They had live bait/meat I believe.

I've caught a few fish just below the dam on the Maryland side, but you have to wade out some.  It's really shallow right there in the static water.  One cookie-cuter smallmouth and a real catfish a few weeks ago.

There's a video on YouTube of the Maryland DNR doing a survey there and electroshocking walleye and muskies!  There's a pool of water created by that big point/island that has a bunch of panfish and really small largemouth.  Never caught anything there, though, except a bunch of small walleye over the winter when water temps were in the 30s.

I usually start past the big section of riffles down river.  Just keep walking until you stop seeing empty tubs of chicken livers. :annoyed1:

i walked right a long the water until it stopped having a path. i saw people prob another 40 yards further waded out into the middle, facing away from the dam and fishing.

My suggestion is to wade that area of the river right now instead of fishing from shore. Shorts and old sneakers is all you need, and the water feels great on a hot summer day. You can wade all the way down to the power lines. Lots and lots and lots of different baits will work to catch smallmouth. Tube jig, Ned rig, Senko-type stick bait, finesse worm, finesse jig, paddletail swimbaits, in-line spinners, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, topwater baits, the list goes on and on.

Can't go wrong with a 4" YUM Dinger or GYCB Senko or BPS Stik-O that's Texas-rigged on a 2/0 EWG worm hook with a 1/16 ounce bullet weight. Cast it upriver and let it drift along the bottom and you will catch smallmouth.  Good luck!

Wade anywhere between the dam and the power lines downriver that go across the river. The water is a little deeper down by the power lines.  Areas with current will be better than slack water right now. Wade out, cast lure of choice, feel bite, set hook, reel in fish. Repeat.

alright, will have to try. I caught 2, 1lb large mouths in carbaugh resevoir, and another 1lb in long pine run resevoir up near me. Next time i head out that way, i'll have to try that. Thank you.

i tried just the other day, no bites. I saw a lot of tails and splashing all around, dont know if they were catfish or smallmouth though. Tried a crank bait in a red color and then a big 0 in a tiger/chartruese, tube in a silver blue, brown and yellow, and black with silver fleck. tried a spook, a mini torpedo, and a popper in black with silver bottom, red feathery tail. was there from 4pm-8pm

More likely carp.

I didn't catch anything near Dam 4 the other night either.  Had one 11-12" smallmouth on that freed itself within a few feet from me, and one other hookup (didn't see it) and that was it. Usually I do pretty good there.

Were you wading or fishing from the bank?  I have a hard time catching fish from shore at Dam 4 in the summertime.  But if I wade out I can catch smallmouth pretty regularly.  Especially downriver by the power lines.

Hmmmm, I'm going to assume that patred WAS wading at Dam 4 and still didn't have much luck.
