Super User Catch and Grease Posted June 26, 2016 Super User Posted June 26, 2016 Went fishing yesterday and I made the big mistake of forgetting to put sunscreen on for my five hour trip in the blazing heat... Now I have second degree burns covering my entire upper body, shoulders to my neck. The blisters are huge, and there are hundreds of tiny ones surrounding the big ones that will probably connect to form one huge mother of a blister of both my shoudlers. Hope I don't get skin cancer, oh well. What's done is done, but I bet I won't ever forget to put sunscreen on again Lol. Still went to work today, and it SUCKED. Â Quote
lecisnith Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 One thing that is better than never forgetting sunscreen, is buying a long-sleeved, high spf shirt. Â The materials with which they are made are moisture wicking and keep you quite cool. Â Just for future considerations... 5 Quote
Super User K_Mac Posted June 26, 2016 Super User Posted June 26, 2016 C&G most of us have done that or worse a time or two. I still have scarring on my ankles from a float trip 40 years ago. A friend burnt the top of her...er...bossom one time on another trip so badly she had to be treated at the hosipital. Once, or even if you're as dumb as I am, twice is usually enough to teach you not to do it again. As mentioned , staying covered is the best option to stay safe. Good luck. 3 Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted June 26, 2016 Super User Posted June 26, 2016 I had worse about two months ago soon as I got to Cincinnati for a job. Not a cloud in the sky 90* out and k was standing on a concrete pad cutting FRP(fiberglass) I beams and C channel with nothing to blow off the dust. The glass like intensified the sun or something my arms were blistered over every square inch.  When end fishing I either wear UA fishing shirts like mentioned above or my Columbia PFG shirts. They look hot but are actually cool. I also wear a buff over my face from salt armour. Quote

Super User slonezp Posted June 26, 2016 Super User Posted June 26, 2016 On the way to the store to get burn cream, stop off and get a hamburger. You look a little emaciated. 10 Quote
tipptruck1 Posted June 26, 2016 Posted June 26, 2016 Thanks to my Irish and German blood. My skin don't like the sun. I learned at a very young age I need sun screen. I never got that bad as far as blisters go, but I learned my lesson. I don't care how hot I am. I will always be wearing some thing that cover my shoulders and upper arms. 2 Quote

Super User Darren. Posted June 27, 2016 Super User Posted June 27, 2016 About 20 odd years ago, my elder brother and I were snorkeling in Canandaigua lake, no shirts, no sunscreen (western NY). Later that night, after we discussed our stories, the next day, we each had the most painful night of our lives. Felt like thousands of needles were being poked into our backs for hours. Our wives made us take oatmeal baths, and so on, nothing helped much. So yeah, we all make mistakes like that. My Dad, in the 1940s worked at Lake George as a Soda Jerk and waiter. Got lobster red every summer. It's just what you did. His skin turned leathery in his later years. He's had a lot of skin cancer excised, but he's still kicking at 85! Be careful from here on.... Super User Angry John Posted June 27, 2016 Super User Posted June 27, 2016 Aloe with ladocane and a fan will be your best friend for the next few days! Â I am Irish and German so I had the same problem years ago. Â Now its long sleeve shirts and full brim hats for me. Â Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 27, 2016 Global Moderator Posted June 27, 2016 Irish, German, and Swedish blood means I get burned if the moon is too bright. A buff, hat, sun gloves, and long sleeve shirt is pretty much a must for me if I'm going to be in the sun all day. I was really surprised how much cooler I stay with the long shirt too.  I'd suggest a nice, hot shower to make it feel better for now 2 Quote
S. Sass Posted June 27, 2016 Posted June 27, 2016 I'm 1/2 German and my dads side is full blood German and none of them have sun sensitive(light color) skin. I mean they are all dark complexion and I am naturally darker as well. Heck all the men including me turn literally brown in the summer. Of course if I go sit out the first week its sunny I can burn but once I get just a little bit of sun I just get darker and darker. I do like the shirts at http://www.duluthtrading.com/ with UPF protection etc. And my fishing hat with a big brim. Looks like that could sting a little there OP. Some lessons are best learned that way you dont forget.  Quote

My skin don't like the sun Okay, being of Irish & German descent as well, I have a different experience with the heredity of fair skin.  Neither myself nor my 5 siblings burn like any of above descendants of beer lovers do.  If I am out in the sun too long without sunscreen, any redness turns to a tan the following day or so.  My wife, who is half German, half mix-of-everything, also rarely burns, even though she loses a tan during the winter faster than I do. Here is the rub, we have 3 kids who are so white, they are practically clear.  And no, Jim Gaffigan was not our milkman.  All 3 burn so easily and even by the end of summer, are never tan.  The are always either white or red, and heaven forbid if they miss a spot with sunscreen.  I blame it on their mothers mother... 2 Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted June 27, 2016 Super User Posted June 27, 2016 Are you burnt under the wife beater too....oh wait.... haha. That is an epic burn. I've done that a time or two. I don't get the blisters that bad though. My last mistake that bad was when I went down to OK to fish in the Oakley Big Bass Tour even on Grand Lake. Being hot, I threw on a cutoff not thinking that since it was early on in the summer I hadn't gone suns out guns out yet. We scouted for about 3 hours and the poor white skin on my biceps and especially the top of my shoulders that had been living in the dark for roughly 7 months didn't fair so well. I burn easily anyway, but that time I burnt BAD! The skin on towards the tops of my shoulders turned almost leathery and it was pretty painful. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted June 27, 2016 Super User Posted June 27, 2016 that looks miserable man. Â i've got to restock some of my stash, but i keep sunscreen in the truck, kayak, house, garage, everywhere i can just to try and avoid the "forgot my sunscreen" look you're sporting! Quote

Oh my my daughter is like that. Her mother was somewhat easy to burn to so I just blamed her for our daughters skin being like Casper  And no, Jim Gaffigan was not our milkman either. Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted June 27, 2016 Super User Posted June 27, 2016 That's a bad sunburn. Next time wear a long sleeve shirt, and apply a good layer of sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 on exposed areas. If you have sensitive skin choose a formula for sensitive skin. Try to stay away from the sun until that heals! Quote
nosdog2 Posted June 28, 2016 Posted June 28, 2016 I once knew this 20 year old knows everything guy in the Navy who thought it was a good idea to suntan off the coast of Somalia with baby oil.  It didn't end up well for "him". 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 29, 2016 Super User Posted June 29, 2016 Ouch! I wear a wide brim hat. If I don't get sunscreen on in time, I still have some cover over my shoulders and neck. Quote
