Clay Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I am new to this site and was wondering what would be a good casting rod to skip jigs I am looking for one around 7' long and a heavy power. I am open to new ideas too. Quote
Smokinal Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I can't help you with a rod selection but I'd like to welcome you to BR! Quote
j bab Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I'm not an expert at skipping by any means, so maybe someone that is can help me out here, but I personally would think heavy might be a little too stiff for this. I would use a medium heavy unless for some reason you're skipping real heavy jigs Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I use a older 7' 4 power g loomis imx to skip 1/4-3/8 jigs. It works like a dream so far. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted May 6, 2016 Super User Posted May 6, 2016 welcome man! one piece that will help narrow down some suggestions is what's the budget as far as the rod goes? Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 I think a slightly shorter rod of 6' 6" or so would be better for the added accuracy needed to thread a jig under low hanging docks. I personally use a 6' 4" medium heavy spinning rod for skipping jigs and a longer seven foot casting rod for throwing jigs question pound other areas. You might just find that skipping is easier done with spinning tackle. Quote

tbone1993 Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Shorter rods help but even having a longer yet more forgiving rod does the trick. I've used a 735c dobyns and it gets the job done. Finding a good skipping jig with a solid trailer is more important. If you can glue your trailers on before hand it will help you from losing so many trailers. Quote
"hamma" Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 when i first started skipping i used a old 5' 9 " shimano xl med heavy spinning rod, paired with a wide spooled reel,... worked well and the shorter rod really gave me better control of the skip due to the angle it provided from the tip of the rod to the waters surface. as i progressed in skipping I adopted a pitch/skip technique (of my own design) with a flipping stick. as far as a full on skip with a casting rod i will use a med heavy action with a curado that I have adjusted to be a bit looser that if i was to cast that same jig, just need to thumb the spool a bit more than usual Quote
