I'm trying to get a feel for the culture here at bass resource.  I seem to be saying things that are bad and so i'm getting the dreaded *******   LOL

seriously though, I don't want to violate the letter or the spirit of the forum rules.  That being said  I wrote the word d**n in a post as in 'd**n sam'

and it was given the star treatment.   I don't get why this word is so offensive.

Please enlighten me guys. I'm trying I really am

We can appreciate the sentiment but it's very simple.

This site is world wide and viewed by human of all ages.

An especially important point to remember as we know how impressionable youths can be.

I'd recommend your offerings reflect this.

No reason to be like "Every Other Forum" out there - The Bass Resource forum has enjoyed excellence & longevity because the majority of the members appear to have adopted an ownership posture and demonstrate that every single day.

A Membership that cares enough to be Stewarts of the site, beyond the fine job the Moderators do, is how & why the magic happens.

A-Jay

BassResource is a  "Family Friendly" fishing website. Think of it this way: Don't ever post something you would not like your mom, son or daughter to read.

I guess the definition of what constitutes profanity here is a little tougher than what I consider to be ok.

so, now I know....................thanks.

Everyone is different, but I think it's universally accepted that D*mn is not accepted..I don't say it in front of my kids.

If you want to see a forum that has gone to hell go read post on bodybuilding.com, bassreasources "strict" code of conduct keeps it from turning into a place where people go to express their hate in every topic.

Here's how I see it.  If you're getting stars for lots of posts, please take a close look at what you're typing.  Chances are you have an attitude problem as well as a profanity problem.  I swear like a sailor in person - ask people that know me.  I can't help it, I'm from western NY, it's how we talk.  I don't have any issue with getting censored by the auto filters here.  Why?  Because I think through what I'm typing, and I have the ability to filter myself.

Here's the relevant sections about the stars you are seeing, from the Forum Rules & FAQs:

Why does the site or product name I posted show up as "another site" or as ***?
First it has nothing to do with competition. In most cases, it has something to do with the points above - site owners not abiding by the rules of the forum, or over-zealous pro-staffers spamming the forums. In some cases, however, the site owner specifically requested that we do not link to their site.

If your post contains ***, then that means you may not discuss that brand here.  Your post will likely be deleted, and you may get banned (see the next paragraph below).

Do no attempt to avoid the profanity filters.
Veiled profanity is unacceptable. Please do not type around the filter by using dollar signs for an S or any similar method. The use of terms like 'F-in', 'OM*G', '**** this', or other abbreviations is considered just another form of avoiding the filters. This applies to any word that is blocked by the filters.

Deliberate attempts to circumvent the filters will be met with a suspension and/or a permanent ban.

TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT!!
We set a higher standard of conduct for our members than other sites. We expect you to treat others with respect. We ban anyone who is disrespectful, disruptive, caustic, or is otherwise rude and confrontational. We also reserve the right to ban anyone without warning or explanation.

All very well stated above.

Another reason why we block swearing, is because some people resort to cursing when they disagree with somebody.  Blocking those words helps tone it down a bit, keeps things civil, and lessens the likelihood of conflicting viewpoints escalating into a fight.

As mentioned in the rules, it's all about respect.  You can disagree with someone without turning it into a personal attack; however some folks need a little help achieving this.  :)

I don't swear like a sailor. I'm better at it than that. But I do know when, and where, to remove such "color" from my speech. This is one of those places.

Why? Funny you should ask.

Look up a couple of posts. See the guy named Glenn, in the red and white shirt, white hat, with his thumb jammed down some poor fishes gullet, and the big shirt-eating grin on his face? Yeah, that guy. (sorry, jefe, I couldn't resist)

He owns this place. He wants this to a civil place, where anybody can be comfortable participating. It's his bat, his ball, his glove and his ballpark. You wanna play here? Follow his rules. It's that simple for me.

Very much agreed. Glenn has done a great job keeping this place open and friendly to all ages and walks of life.

This place is as friendly and inviting as it is because of the moderation here. Simple as that.

I completely agree. There was a time back a few years when politics and religious discussions were allowed here. After a couple of years, it became apparent that these topics were divisive by nature, especially in this format. There are many other forums where you can have your say about anything that flips your switch, using whatever language that makes you happy. Glenn and the others have done a great job of making this an interesting and informative place.

I like the mix here. If I have a fishing related question or want to know what bait or tackle is hot I can find out here. If I need info on the where to find the best scrapple, music, bigfoot photos, or many other necessary things, I can probably find answers here as well.
