Lake Willoughby Vermont

Hey guys gonna be up on lake willoughby for a few days next weekend. I know it's a glacial lake with gin clear water and really no bass fishing from what I've scene,but how is the fishing here any tips? Heard there's lake trout in it wondering if anyone's got any tips or spots any tips on what to throw for lures. Anything really is appreciated.

In field n stream they call the Willoughby river rainbow run in the springtime when the spawn happens. During this time it can snow, ice up the rod eyes and see fresh bear tracks on the shoreline. (Lake trout) Massive lake trout. Just food for thought for a earlier spring trip. My uncle and cousin did this trip after they read about it in FnS.

There aren't any bass in Willoughby to speak of. The run of rainbows from Magog is basically done. There are bigger lake trout in Willoughby then any other lake in New England. Honestly if you are looking for bass... I would fish some the smaller bodies of water. Some uncredible smallie fishing up there.

Hmmm interesting. I was looking at google earth and saw a couple ponds around such as bean pond and I see round pond looks pretty deep in the woods if I could get some acess in there might be deadly place. Any other recommendations I will have my canoe and I'm always down for some good smallie action.

Bean pond and the other small ponds just west of Willoughby are all stocked with trout. No smallies there.

How far up for the smallies from willoughby? I can go 15-20 minutes roughly

Echo, Seymour, Lake Parker, Shadow Lake, etc etc. I'm sure you can find more online too.

Thanks man appreciate it. Echo looks prime small so I can cover the water easier. Thinking a tube or hula grub on a football head would be the trick.

I can highly recommend Lake Seymour for smallies.  A friend of mine has fished it & rates it as one of the best he's fished, his PB came from that lake.

Any word on what bait he was using or what has worked?

He caught it on a tube, but said jerkbaits, and spinnerbaits worked slowly were working well.  I fish Quabbin a lot in the spring, and if the water temps when your up there are in the 40s up to mid 50 degree range I'd be throwing the hell out of a blade bait.  I don't know if you've ever fished one, but just use a med action rod and lift and let it fall, most hits will occur on the fall so stay in touch with your blade.  Gd luck.
