I purchased one of those big, hard body, Spro topwater rats last year more as a novelty lure to hang in my garage with some of my musky baits. Has anyone had any experience catching bass on one of those? I live in MI and when I tell people its a bass lure they just laugh.

I own one, but haven't thrown it yet. That said, I caught a 4lb largie last year with a squirrel tail in its throat. Yes, it'll work... even in Michigan.

I caught bass with the 40 in 57 degree water in West Virginia...

I wouldnt worry about the 50.

I have one of the 50's, even 12" bass will attack it. One thing you get used to throwing big baits is the "There's no bass in here big enough to bite that", or "What are you fishing for? Sharks?!" First time I saw one of the rats in action, it caught the biggest bass I've ever seen come out of the lake by my house.

Big baits aren't novelty. That 50 is a great rat for a great price. I caught several 1 pounders on it and a few that weren't as long as the bait from head to tail. Bass eat them with no problem or hesitation at all.

Use for musky, every big predator fish eats terrestrial critters like rats, if you catch bass, then you will know.

Rats have blown up on the West Coast and the Spro rats really put rat baits at a reasonable price point for a lot of customers.  Most rats prior were custom small batch jobs that ran upwards of $50, usually around $100.  Spro put them in the sub-$30 range and a lot more accessable.  If the bass you're targeting eat frogs, they'll hammer the rat.  Keep fishing it around the people that are laughing and they'll be throwing them soon enough.
