MikeOGNR Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Will be stationed soon at Port Hueneme in Cali. Anyone have any small water or big water bass spots near there. Hoping to get on some big ones as this will be my first time ever in California and I will be here for awhile. Any helps appreciated Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted January 14, 2016 Super User Posted January 14, 2016 You're not going to be that far from Casitas Lake which is probably going to be the closest lake to you. As for small water local ponds and public parks around there, not really sure. But I'm sure some of the other guys located closer to that area will give you some feedback or may have to PM them as small waters are guarded. The small parks I fish are well known, but I don't put them out on the open forums. Quote
fisherrw Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Yep lake casitas is closest but no good from the shore you need a boat and if you don't rent a boat there a inspection for quagga mussels and you can't put your boat if for 30 days or something like that anyways. Not sure what your best bet is... Good luck Quote

Anywhere from I'd say 1 to 10 acres of water. Most of my fishing from shore is done in the LA/OC area which is about 100mi south of where you are. Look up the CA Fish and Game planting schedule for Ventura County and if there are public waters they stock it will show you on the map......anywhere they stock trout, there will be bass and some of them on the large size. https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FishPlants/Default.aspx?county=Los+Angeles,Orange&time=Present There's a link, just type in Ventura County when it asks for location. Super User WRB Posted January 16, 2016 Super User Posted January 16, 2016 Lake Casitas is about 35 miles. Lake Piru about 40 miles. Lake Cachuma and Castaic are about 60 miles. All 4 lakes offer good bass fishing. You also have the Pacific Ocean at your door step with miles of good surf fishing and Oxnard (Channel Islands) and Ventura harbors with spotted bay and calico bass that you can use bass tackle to catch as long as the equipment is safe to use in salt water....rinse in fresh water after use! Western Outdoor News is a local sport fishing /hunting weekly news to check out. Welcome to SoCal. Tom Quote
camman Posted January 16, 2016 Posted January 16, 2016 Yeah you should pick up ocean fishing, its your new backyard. You can fish the beach for surf perch and the occasional halibut. I use to go to Channel Islands harbor and fish for bat rays in the summer time. Not sure if its still there, but also check out Rancho Simi Park in Simi Valley, another small lake...which was free to fish Man I haven't fished Casitas in years...I heard that it was so low that they had or were about to stop allowing private launches? Hopefully the rain has changed that...I use to fish that quite frequently as thats where I had the boat inspected for....Also Piru use to be a great lake to fish the Northern Strain largemouth, but again not sure how it is once they found the quagga. Slade House Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Surf perch , go get you some gulp camo sandworms, rig up a carolina rig and go to La Janelle Park right near the base and fish from shore. 1 Quote
BobbyNitro Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I have been here in PH for a little over two years now. Until i get back down to San Diego I have converted to ocean, never had a bad day. The lakes around here are fun but do not produce as well as I thought they would. I have put my boat in Piru, castaic, pyramid and casitas, i'd have to say i would rather drive a few hours east and fish Lake perris, never had a bad day there either. I will be around PH for another year, PM me if you want to get a line wet. I'm always interested in more fishing partners. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 17, 2016 Super User Posted February 17, 2016 If you drive to Perris, DVL is about the time and distance. Putting a boat on Casitas isn't easy! Our lakes are still in drought condition, 50% below full pool and that impacts the quality of the bass fishing. Welcome to SoCal, Tom Quote
BobbyNitro Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Unfortunately you cannot launch at DVL do to their poorly designed boat launch, the H2O level is so bad it is lower than the "curb" at bottom of ramp thus making it non-usable. I refuse to pay the boat rental fees as well. I am born and raised in SoCal, mostly SD area and miss Otay Lakes! But as it say's in my "Favorite Lake or River" section of profile, I just can't find a lake that produced like Perris. I have not fished there since Aug 2015 so possibly could've have changed. Nevertheless, still in my opinion it is one of the best fisheries in SoCal. My step dad fished casitas and cachuma about a decade ago and mentioned it was the best lakes around. I don't know if I fished it wrong or what the problem was but the few times I went to casitas. It was only a 1 or 2 fish day. I don't want to be a "Thread Thief" but ideas to fish those lakes would be great. Quote
Slade House Posted March 7, 2016 Posted March 7, 2016 thats the thing about casitas , its such a hard lake cause the pattern changes every 2 weeks. PM me and ill tell you what to do Quote
