Steveo-1969 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Pflueger President is hard to beat at $60. 6 Quote
Jake the Cake Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have two Shimano IX reels (4000 and 2000) that you can find at Bass Pro $15 each. I've used them for 3 or 4 seasons now and never had a single problem. I also have a Plueger Trion which has worked just as well for a couple seasons, but at 1/3 or 1/2 the price I find it hard to beat the IX series. Quote
timm Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I just purchased a lews speed spin Jason christie g2 from Wal-Mart. I used it this past weekend and really like it. It's very smooth and looks great. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 13, 2016 Super User Posted January 13, 2016 The new Shimano Sedona FE is a bargin at $70, a little above your budget. Tom 3 Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted January 13, 2016 Super User Posted January 13, 2016 The Mitchell 300Pro looks and feels nice. Good reviews too. 1 Quote
greywalls Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Define "a whole lot" of money. Suggestions @ the $50, $100, $150 and $200 price points (all, commonly regarded as "not a whole lotta cash") will vary... Quote

smallie.mike Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Pflueger trion or president! Supreme if you could find one on sale. For your price range I'd stick with pflueger, I'm not a fan of any shimano spinning reels under the stradic. Quote
Retired@176 Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 TW > sale items > used = Lew's Tournament Pro HP Spinning Reel 200 and 400 for $66.88 each 1 Quote
lecisnith Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 I have two presidents. Buddy of mine has a president and a trion. Extraordinarily smooth, good drag. Have used the pooh out of them. Most people seem to think the president performs like a reel in the $100 price range. Quote

Funny, I had one of those $15 Shimanos and it was the worst reel I'd ever used. And I was used to $10-$30 gear back then too. Really put me off of Shimano as a whole. I would second (or third or fourth) the President recommendation. Super reel for the money, and it's been that way for years. 2 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted January 14, 2016 Super User Posted January 14, 2016 FFO tackle has size 35 Pflueger Supreme MGX for 64.88 (and check the banner at the top of their homepage for additional promo discounts): I prefer a size 30, but a 35 should be good for an MH rod. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 14, 2016 Super User Posted January 14, 2016 You can also find some good deals on used reels if you keep an eye on the classifieds. All but one of my spinning reels were purchased off fishing forums' classifieds. Quote
tander Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I also suggest the Pfluegers, take a look at the President Limited Edition. It's a little less weight and higher gear ration. Also a good looking reel. Quote
Cmiller Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I have a pflueger president, supreme and president limited edition. The limited edition is a great value with a sealed drag, two spools and carbon handle all for 80 dollars. Quote

Rbm18 Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I agree with the shimano Sedona . That would be my choice 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 14, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 14, 2016 I have 4 or 5 Presidents. Can't really see a reason to spend the money on anything more expensive than that now unless I want something really lightweight. I've mainly put them on H2O rods and end up with a combo for just over $100. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 14, 2016 Super User Posted January 14, 2016 Another vote for the Plueger President. Best bang for the buck these days. Just as good as any Shimano Sahara or Symetre today. Shimano just increased the price break on these two popular models. I've now become a Pflueger fan! Quote
Hawghead Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 I had a President, that for some reason just twisted the heck out of my mono. I know they are well liked reels, and my brothers all use them, but I couldnt get one to work for me. I have used spinning gear all my life, and I have never used more of a line twisting reel. Took it back and went with the Sedona. YMMV Quote
