New spool or get a 50?

Hey guys I'm looking to start dabbling in the BFS world, and got a quick question. I'm not looking to get super serious into it right off the bat so I'd like to go cheap(er). I have a citica 200e and I thought about buying a spool from hedgehog studios. The spool for it weighs 9 point something grams, the same weight as a stock 50e. So would the spool be light enough or do I need to wait and get a 50 with a hedgehog spool? The 50 weighs 5 something grams. Also I plan on putting ceramic bearings in the 200e if I go that route. The 200 shallow spool is for pitching and flipping. Shallower and nice upgrade over the stock spool, but its not a BFS spool. I would just get a 50e. You will have so much better time matching a rod to it, and I am sure you will enjoy it.

I can't answer that question, but personally I would be looking to buy a smaller reel designed for BFS.  Never owned (or used) a Citica, but I think they are about the same size as my Curado 201E7.  The E7 is just too good at what I consider "normal" size bass lures to consider trying to turn it into a light lure reel....provide it can be done.

 

How light do you want to go?  You can easily cast a true 3/16 oz. weight with quite a few stock reels that aren't considered BFS reels, and they won't break the bank.

There's a new Shimano Curado 70 size coming out in February. If you're looking at the 50 size Shimano's, I'd wait for that one.

Including the plastic you're looking at 1/4oz and possibly more depending on what plastic it is. 

1/8oz tungsten with a trick worm and a light wire hook is not a problem for any of today's modern reels. Proper rod is the important part in the equation.

What rod would you recommend? Phenix maxim ML?

I'm not familiar with that series but I use a Phenix Recon 2. Light or ml is the right place to start. Mine is the 713 ml but the 712/682 is also a good choice. I can throw true 1/8oz baits but the 712/682 would do it better. However, that's the lowest I go and normally it's closer to 1/4oz so that's why I went with the 713.

Does the Citica 200E use the same spool as the Curado 200E? I ask this because I don't see a spool for a Citica 200E on Hedgehog's website. 

If the Scorpion XT1500 spool works in your Citica, I don't see why it wouldn't work out for casting the weights you want to cast. Sure, I guess you could cast that weight with the stock spool like Flyfisher does but why try when you don't have to. The lighter spool is lighter but it also holds less line and that combo makes for a much more pleasant experience when casting lighter weights.

Yes I interchanged curado e and citica spools last week so I know they will fit. I also tried throwing a 1/8oz head with a 2" swimbait on an ul panfish rod(rated 1/32 to 1/4) and backlashed terribly so I would go with a lighter spool. Anybody know of another spool besides hedgehog that would fit?

The Citica E doesnt get much love from the aftermarket spool makers. You are better off getting a Shimano 50.
