TxHawgs Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Fairly new to Tx and fished all my life but came from PA and now I got the bass bug bad. Need to buy a whole arsenal as I will be fishing in a club on lake fork. I need a topwater rod for bigger baits so gonna go with a 6'10" MH but should I go fast action or will that be too stiff? Would I be better with a Moderate or Moderate Fast action? I'm buying Loomis NRX and GLX rods, for square bills I was gonna do the GLX crankbait rod M power 7' moderate action? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 2, 2015 Global Moderator Posted December 2, 2015 A 6' 10" MH/F should be just fine if you're talking baits like spooks or buzzbaits. I like a MH/M for squarebills since I'm usually pulling them through cover, gives a little more power to move a big fish away from the stuff. Plus, I don't fish a bait smaller than a 1.5 on casting gear so the MH works perfect. 1 Quote

I thought M power seemed a little light esp. for the lakes I'm fishing but I was going by there lure weight and the M was rated up to 5/8oz. and the MH up to 1oz. But your right and I should consider where I'm fishing and sz. of fish over lure weight. (As long as it still in the specs of the rod) Quote

(As long as it still in the specs of the rod) I believe Bluebasser indicated MH power (medium heavy) with M action (moderate) Moderate & Medium fast actions give you a couple benefits over Fast & Extra Fast: > Better fight tension (slack-line prevention) > Better tear-off cushioning (more important with trebles & small single hooks) > Longer casts (not important in dense cover) Roger 1 Quote
junyer357 Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 I prefer a fast action for frogs/ single hook lures and a moderate for treble lures like spooks and popr. Quote
smr_hga Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 I like using my ultra light rod for poppers because i feel like i can "pop" it better. For crankbaits a M/H is better. This is just my opinion, bass don't get much bigger than 16 inches at my pond. So using an ultra light isn't as big of a risk as it would be somewhere like Lake Fork. Just use what you feel works best. Nothing is set in stone. Quote
Zach Dunham Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 MH is definitely not too much for a big topwater. Not at all. As someone stated above, MH with fast action would be perfect for most of that. I am someone who prefers a longer rod, though, so I might go to 7 foot. Quote
TxHawgs Posted December 2, 2015 Author Posted December 2, 2015 Ok I'm definitely gonna get a MH and H power rod for topwater spooks and such, and was gonna go 6'10" to clear the water with the tip down to walk the dog. I'm leaning towards Moderate or Moderate Fast action over a Fast action rod. So that's my question who fishes Moderate, Moderate Fast or Fast action and what length to clear the water with tip down, I'm 6' by the way. Quote

EllisJuan Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I was thinking about picking up a NRX 843C MBR to see how I like it throwing small frogs and Whopper Ploppers. Maybe give lipless cranks a try with it. I have a NRX 803C JWR I have been throwing the topwaters with and thought maybe the slightly slower action of the MBR would be nice. Quote

Loomis GLX PR844C http://www.gloomis.com/content/g-loomis/us/en/home/conventional/rods1/saltwater/classic/POPPING_ROD_SERIES.html You are welcome to try mine. The rod is saddled with a Core 100MG and #12 Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo. 1 Quote
Super User iceintheveins Posted January 20, 2017 Super User Posted January 20, 2017 I like a crankbait style rod actually in a moderate fast, great for all topwaters except frogs. Quote
tholmes Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 Medium/moderate-fast for treble hook baits, Medium-heavy/fast for single hook baits, Heavy/ex-fast for frogs. Tom Quote
bigfruits Posted January 20, 2017 Posted January 20, 2017 I tend to like XF rods with the pop-x and F for everything else that is topwater. Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted January 20, 2017 Super User Posted January 20, 2017 I use 6"6" fast action mh Can walk dog better with fast tip Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 21, 2017 Posted January 21, 2017 Fast action does not in and of itself equate to a stiff tip. A soft fast or mod fast action allows subtle action to be applied. 1 Quote
DubyaDee Posted January 26, 2017 Posted January 26, 2017 I use a Dobyns 743 and co polymer for spooks. It'll launch a spook a mile and give you enough tip to walk the dog and hook up/land the fish. Quote

NRX 843 is great for lipless and small frogs (baby kahara!). haven't tried a whopper plopper yet. also love it for squarebills. Quote
