Luna2406 Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 Took my Yak out on Tuesday to Diascund Reservoir, saw some baitfish jumping so I decided to throw a crank bait next to them. First cast out there I caught about a 2 1/2lb bass. Kept seeing another ball of bait at the surface so I threw to them and as I was reeling back in I felt the vibration on the crank bait change so I set the hook and my line started running. It was awesome, I had my drag almost all the way up and the fish was still pulling line out. I had to get on land to finish landing the bowfin. Didn't have a scale but it was about 25in long. I'll post pictures up later, wasn't able to take too many pictures because the fish was exhausted and I wanted to release it safely, which I did. Just an overall great catch, my first bowfin lived up to the reputation. 2 Quote
edfitzvb Posted October 17, 2015 Posted October 17, 2015 My first bowfin was caught on a spinnerbait several years ago. It was about 16-18 inches long and it completely ruined the spinner bait. It was twisted like it had been caught in metal gears. Gave me a real respect for the strength of the fish. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 17, 2015 Super User Posted October 17, 2015 Bowfin are awesome, around here if you find some clean water and can see one swim by they look crazy they are like a greyish color in the water but like dark brown when you take them out, and that long fin on their back looks crazy when they are swimming around, I wouldn't mind keeping a small one in a fish tank... Me and my grandpa were fishing at a place called rays mill pond in matted grass and he caught one, and he was dragging back to the boat while it was covered in grass and he lipped it thinking it was a bass, it tore his thumb up pretty good... Did the one you caught have a tag on it? i caught one there with a tag last year and sent it to DGIF. they gave me all the info about when it was tagged and length. It was cool to see the growth and that it was caught less than 100 yards from where it was tagged. I have seen some monster bowfin in there too. A lot of times when you see baitfish busting like that i have seen gar in the vicinity. 1 Quote

I haven't seen any gar there, I know that day there was bait fish jumping all over the place so who knows what was chasing it. It was pretty exciting though. 1 Quote

I've caught my PB there and I've only pulled out one dink from there. Looking forward to the water rising, with it being as low as it is, we can see where every lay down is. Quote

Looking forward to the water rising, with it being as low as it is, we can see where every lay down is. mark all those spots....i am planning on going out there with my GPS on my fish finder and mark a bunch of spots so when the water does rise, i'll know where to go. The nice thing about the lower water is they have less places to go now...that is a big lake and pretty consistent depth wise too I may actually get out there this weekend, i don't think i have ever fished there in colder weather.
