Rcfan7 Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 So i got my first baitcaster about 3 week ago and the guy that sold it to me told me that if it was adjusted right then the bait you have on would slowly fall to the ground without crashing down and causing backlash.. Theres one problem... My bait doesn't fall at all no matter how much i loosen the tension knob.. Anyone know thy this is happening ? Or what i could try to fix it? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 2, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 2, 2015 How heavy is the bait you're trying to adjust it to and what other braking system does it have? Quote
John G Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 What kind of reel is it? Has your line dug into itself preventing from falling? Quote
Super User deep Posted August 2, 2015 Super User Posted August 2, 2015 The reel is not engaged when you're trying this, right? 2 Quote
Rcfan7 Posted August 2, 2015 Author Posted August 2, 2015 How heavy is the bait you're trying to adjust it to and what other braking system does it have? I've tried all kinds of different bait.. It has another knob that controls the breaking system ranging from 1-7.. The guy who sold it to me said to keep it on 7 as i was still learning to throw a baitcaster. Quote
Rcfan7 Posted August 2, 2015 Author Posted August 2, 2015 What kind of reel is it? Has your line dug into itself preventing from falling. Bass Pro Shops tourney special.. This could be a possibility.. What would i do to fix this and/or prevent it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 2, 2015 Global Moderator Posted August 2, 2015 Sounds like it has magnetic brakes as well. I would dial it back to around 5 or 6 for now. Can you cast it at all or is the spool not disengaging at all? If the line is dug in like was suggested, all you need to do is pull line out of the reel until you get past that point, then you should be good to go. Sometimes this happens when pressure is applied to the line (hooksets/snags). Quote
Dvigs16 Posted August 2, 2015 Posted August 2, 2015 if the bait isn't falling at all, you wont be able to cast...Seems like you have a tangle in the spool.. try pulling the line out and then reeling, could be a bad spool job. As soon as you press the trigger that bait should be moving and if it isn't; adjusting the knob bit by bit should get a free fall started. 1 Quote
Rcfan7 Posted August 2, 2015 Author Posted August 2, 2015 It casts decently well.. Say I'm just holding it and I push down on the button, it won't fall until I shake it some whereas I was told that it should slowly fall by itself if it was adjusted right.. Quote
dave Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 If it's casting okay, keep backing off of the magnetic control gradually. The best thing to do is to read the tutorials here on BR, and figure out that way. Each bait will be different based on weight and aerodynamics. Back the mag off to 0. Then, test your drop speed. Adjust brake for drop speed and then adjust the mag to 5. Then fine tune it until you're casting well. You will have then figured it out yourself and be able to make adjustments as you change baits. Super User scaleface Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 If the tension knob is loose and its not falling at all there is something wrong with it . Take it back . Quote
Ski213 Posted August 3, 2015 Posted August 3, 2015 Is this a new or used reel? You said the guy that sold it to you but is that a salesperson or a private seller? Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 If the tension knob is loose and its not falling at all there is something wrong with it . Take it back . X2. Magnetic brakes have no affect when setting the spool tension control for a slow drop. Since you can cast okay, there can't be line digging in. Take the reel back. Has to be a problem. I had one new reel that came with the opposite problem. Tightening the tension control had no affect on slowing the spool. Backlash city. Quote
Rcfan7 Posted August 3, 2015 Author Posted August 3, 2015 Is this a new or used reel? You said the guy that sold it to you but is that a salesperson or a private seller? New.. he was a salesperson at bass pro Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 3, 2015 Super User Posted August 3, 2015 New.. he was a salesperson at bass pro No Bass Pro here, but there is a Cabela's about 35-40 minutes away. I feel certain BPS will handle your problem the same way Cabela's would. They will replace the reel or allow you to put the money towards another item (or items) of your choice in the store. Won't have to be for a reel either. I tried a micro guide spinning rod. Hated it. Took it back and got the regular guide model. It wasn't much better. Took it back and bought some clothes. Quote

I'd imagine there is a way it could be exchanged through the mail. A little of a pain but better than dealing with a malfunctioning reel. Quote
