Welcome!

Not sure what the recommendation was, but typically, I'll match diameters and not lb test ratings. Though, I'm really confused by your question.

Welcome.  Lots of great info here on the forums and great people as well.

I think there's a bit of a terminology and technical difference between those of us in the Americas and those over seas.  For example I recall reading instructions on a European and also an Australian angling site that said braided line "backing" should be used on the reel before spooling up with mono...I have no idea why, unless the spools of the reels are much larger in those countries.

Here in the US many anglers will use braid as their main line, with a length of mono attached as a leader.  But other than that, the term "backing" is more applicable to fly fishing than with casting/spinning gear.

Hopefully I didn't confuse you even more :)

Braid used to slip on older spools, then they started making spools to prevent that. Backing used to be a must, but most newer spools are braid ready and it is not a must anymore.

I personally don't use a backer with braid, even on my OLD reels. I have a Abu Eon that I have kept braid on since Spider wire first came out, never had an issue. That is about 20 years now.

Having said that, buying mono and a smaller spool of braid will make it more affordable, but I would not say you have to back it with mono. The other reason you might want to back the spool, is to help the small diameter braid fill the spool. Some times 330 yards of braid will only half or 3/4 ways fill a spool. You don't want it over filled, but you want it as close to full as possible to help with casting.

Welcome to the forums! I wouldn't worry too much about matching the diameters or lb test. Get some cheap mono to put on as backing and fill your spool part of the way, and then connect the braid to the mono and continue to fill until the spool is full.

Welcome to the site? I hope you stick around for a while.

If you are using mono as backing to save braid, it is not crucial that it be a certain diameter. I tend to stick with mono that I feel will tie a nice, tight line-to-line knot with my braid that won't leave a lump on my spool. Typically line that is approximately the same DIAMETER (not strength) as my braid works just fine. Even that isn't a huge deal, but heavy mono will give you a fat knot and I like my braid to lay smoothly on the spool. Then make sure you put enough braid on to cover whatever length of line you may have out given how you fish. If you are just putting some mono on so the braid won't slip on the spool, you don't need much mono at all, but I'd still avoid a thick stiff line.

If you have questions about using braid as backing, which some people do to save fluoro, let us know; or about the actual line-to-line knots you'll need for tying leaders to the braid. Ask those in the other sections now that you've introduced yourself.

Welcome.

I have 15# Berkley Big Game as my backing for 17# Fireline and 50# PowerPro braid. That line is cheap enough for backing, but strong enough should I ever hook into anything that can take that much drag. I used a double uni knot same as you would for a leader.

In fact, I use 15# Big Game for topwaters too.
