WPCfishing Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I want to buy another specific rod. A spinner bait rod is the only rod I'm missing. I've been using a few 1/4-3/4 rod for the job. All MHF. What's the story with the SB blank taper? How will I benefit from using one? I see most of them are 1/4-5/8. I have it in my mind that they are to lite. Wayne Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 That would kind of suck it you like throwing 3/4 oz. spinnerbaits. Personally without actually trying a rod with that rating, I wouldn't go over 3/8 oz. for reasons I mentioned in another spinnerbait thread. I'm looking forward to replies from those using spinnerbait specific rods. It is a favorite lure of mine. I have always used whatever was in my hand at the time....limiting lure weight to the rod being used. The only dedicated spinnerbait rod I have is a 6' MHF Lightning. Dedicated by me....not the rod. a1712 Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 My favorite is a Big Bear 6'3" MH/F w/a shorter handle. I like the short length for underhand casting under limbs, docks etc. and skipping. For open water, I use a 7'6" M/F. But use what you feel comfortable with. A friend uses a 7" MH/S, I've used it and hated it, but he catches fish from the surface to 30' on Spinnerbaits. Brian. Quote
TorqueConverter Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 "spinnerbait rods" are also "swimbait rods" in my book which mean they are MH F rods with a longer, softer and slower tip than what you would consider normal for a MH F. The advantage of the slower and softer tip is I don't have to feed the fish the bait the way I have to do on stiffer tipped faster rods meaning I can react to the bite, set the hook and hook fish deeply and well. The Great Blue Heron Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 I fish 3/8oz spinnerbaits a lot. Any medium-fast, medium-extra fast, or MHF will do fine. If you are looking to cast distance, obviously a 7 ft rod would be better, and if you're throwing a heavier bait, the MH rod may handle better. I don't look for a soft tip or slower action on my spinnetbait rods, I like fast and stiff so I can feel more actual structure. I find that I get hung up less fishing around submerged wood that way. Some folks like a little give at the end for even more casting distance and to be able to feel the blades vibrating? I don't know. My ideal spinnetbait rod is Medium Extra Fast, probably around 6'6" and like I said before, 3/8 baits. Some of my best outings are with a 5'6" MF pistol grip All Star, throwing to docks at shorter range. And I just picked up a G Loomis SBR752C that looks 100% perfect for my style of spinnerbait fishing. It's medium extra fast, but they make a light extra fast if you want to toss 1/4 oz baits. You just need to experiment and see what setup works best for your style of fishing. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 I have 3 spinnerbait rods and they are my favorite bait, my custom is 6' MH-F with cherry wood split grips I had done in the late 90s. That rod was made short for slinging 1/2oz spinnerbaits under overhanging trees for tournament fishing and the wood grips kept my hands from cramping up. My "normal" everyday spinnerbait rods are a 6'6" MH-F and a 7'MH-F, as you can already see, I prefer MH rods with a fast action. I use that power and action because 99% of my spinnerbait fishing is in and around cover, I use my 6'6" for 1/2oz and under that I roll cast to specific targets, the 7' gets used when I'm paralleling long stretches of bank and rip rap, I get more casting distance and I'm able to use a larger bait with it. I have used a moderate and moderate fast actions for spinnerbaits and they are ok for covering large areas of open water but trying to free a bait from weeds with that kind of action is kind of hard so I stick with what works for me. 1 Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted June 14, 2015 Super User Posted June 14, 2015 A MH/F rated for 1/4 - 3/4 oz is my SB rod too. I've not seen any reason to pursue a "spinnerbait" specific rod, as the trusty MH/F does just fine for me. Is there some issue you're having with your current rod that is causing you to rethink your choice? Quote

He is just trying to justify buying another rod. You should be helping out by giving reasons why he needs another rod....or two. 1 Quote
Jolly Green Posted June 14, 2015 Posted June 14, 2015 7' MH/F rated to 3/4 oz. for me, as everywhere I fish spinnerbaits I like to cover a lot of water full of cover. Good reach with around a 1/2 oz. bait and I can get it up quick when ticking rocks, etc. Also plenty of muscle for fishing in mild river current. Quote

I also have a worm jig rod that does a great job for me. Since they are all job specific I figure I'll give a spinner bait rod a try, Like so many I've been using a couple of MHF rods. Quote

Yeah, the post on the Lews HM85 sale is one I can't thank you enough for!!! Every time I use that rod I like it more and more, the sensitivity is great but the guide train really makes it a wonderful rod to cast with. So if my spinning rod is like that I imagine your cranking rods are really good. Quote

papajoe222 Posted June 15, 2015 Posted June 15, 2015 Under what conditions do you normally opt for using a spinnerbait? Your answer will point you in the direction of the rod that will suit your needs. I fish from a boat and most often use a spinnerbait when casting to targets, so I opt for a MH in the 6ft. to 6ft.6in. range. If you slow roll spinnerbaits over deep structure, you may want something in the 7ft. range. I prefer a Mod.Fast tip as my favorite presentation is with less line. I'd talk with a custom rod builder. Often, they can point you in the right direction for you after asking a few questions. Then, too, if that option (a custom rod) is within your price range you may want to purchase from him. Quote

I want a rod I can work with whether it be in shallow or deep water. I'm hoping to find a spinnerbait specific rated at 1/4-3/4 6'6" or 7' that is MF. I say that because I like the Team Lews crank bait rods so well. They do everything great. Basically I want the 6'6" or the 7' cranking rod I have but, with a fast tip that has been designed for spinner baits. Or I'll continue to use the 7' cranking Rod for spinnerbaits. It's been Stella so far doing double duties. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 16, 2015 Super User Posted June 16, 2015 For heavy baits I'm into light inshore rods(saltwater). I throw the castaic 9" trout swimsuit sometimes. Quote
