Green Trout Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I know this is like the orginal popper topwater. Do you find these better than others on the market or do you find other brands to excel over this one? What is your favorite brand that you feel like produces the most bass? Quote
fishinphilly Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 as long as it floats and has good hooks on it ill use anything to try to catch fish lol but most brands are the same i like the H20 xpress by academy because they have a good color selection and come with vmc trebles 1 Quote
Jolly Green Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I like Pop R's but I don't like their hooks. Xcalibur Zell Pops work pretty well. Good "bloop" seems to matter more than color. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted May 24, 2015 Super User Posted May 24, 2015 Do you find these better than others on the market Assuming you are referring to the Pop-R sold right now and not the version from 30 years ago, no. do you find other brands to excel over this one? There are many times you can go out early in the AM or just before dusk and both an inexpensive Pop-R and a higher priced topwater will catch the same amount of fish. However, there are many times that people will throw their pop-r, not get bit and think they aren't biting a popping style bait. This is where the Yellow Magics, Ricos, Pop X, and others excel. They have a unique body/sound/blurp that is "unique" to certain topwaters that can attract bass when others fail. What is your favorite brand that you feel like produces the most bass? Yellow Magic Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted May 24, 2015 Super User Posted May 24, 2015 I absolutely love Hula Poppers. They produce better than anything else for me. 1 Quote
*Hank Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Megabass...I know there expensive but there the best and I hardly ever lose them unless the line breaks. 2 Quote
Frenchman83 Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Overall I like the Pop-R taking everything into account. Quote

Weld's Largemouth Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 Heddon Pop n Image Jr Has a slurp and chug unlike any other popper. Plus the paint jobs are superb. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted May 25, 2015 Super User Posted May 25, 2015 Pop-R & the ignored Rattlin' Chug Bug Some pop better than others, fish hit any of them. The chug bug is easy to work and it's pleasing to my eye, pretty much the only one I use in freshwater. Quote

You're right the freshwater ones don't rattle but still very effective. I do use the 1 oz rattlin one in saltwater, works there too. Quote
CeeJay Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 I absolutely love Hula Poppers. They produce better than anything else for me. One of my favorite poppers as well. Definitely a classic. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 i used a PopX today from megabass for the first time today and was thoroughly impressed with the action and the hooks are strong and really sharp. 1 Quote
Sea NaCl Posted May 26, 2015 Posted May 26, 2015 The Lobina Rico definitely catches more fish but I would rather have 5 Pop-Rs in different colors than one Rico Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 Zell Roland is given credit for modifying the Pop-R so it could be fished faster and spit water in lieu of gurgling or blooping sounds. Zell learned this from some local Texas anglers, so he didn't invent the more streamline Pop-R. The Japanese took this faster design in the early 80's to a new level with a lure named Micheals, the forerunner of all the other Japanese brands. The Micheal was very streamline and could fished fast scattering along the surface and spitting water like a frightened Shad. I use Iovino's Splash-It, good value and excellent action with chicken feathered Owner hooks. A rattling Chug Bug caught a 18+ lb bass 2 years ago at lake Perris, monster top water bass! Tom Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 Excuse me but as a friend Zell aint nobody taught him, he taught most every one on Toledo Bend! Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 I just bought a Chug Bug in the frog color. I've used it once. I notice it walks, whether I try to make it or not. I didn't get a bite, but I'll pull it out one evening at sundown. I know just the place I'll try it. It does have a rep from everyone I know for being a big bass lure. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 I've caught a whole slew of fish on the Pop-R, and some nice ones. It culls none. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2015 Super User Posted May 26, 2015 Excuse me but as a friend Zell aint nobody taught him, he taught most every one on Toledo Bend!Since you know Zell ask him if the Bassmaster article about the Pop-R was accurate, that is my source. Zell went into detail how he modified the Pop-R by sanding down the sides, the bottom lip etc to get the lure to spit and run across the surface faster. Tom 1 Quote

Tom I think you mean Rick Clunn, here's the article he wrote about it: http://www.***.com/all/rick-clunn-reviews-lobina-topwater-lures/#.VWcWOs9VhBc Rebels work OK. Like anything else though, if you want to spend more money you can buy a better product. Splash it's, yellow magic, lobina, etc. One hidden gem I've found is the Academy brand H2O poppers. They are superb for the price if you catch them on sale in early spring. Love those things, good hooks, great paint, split ring standard. Quote
Gotfishyfingers? Posted May 28, 2015 Posted May 28, 2015 Pop-R & the ignored Rattlin' Chug Bug X3!!!! Both rock on ultra lite rods to!! Anglers have gained tons of topwater confidence learning how to fish these as a kid back in the day. They were a staple in most tackle boxes. At that time the options were NOT endless as they are now. Tried and true lures were the way to go for most. Now a days everyone is looking for the next best thing. Quote
