*Hank Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I'm looking to get a new drop shot combo and my price range is about $200-$350 for the combo. So my question is what rod and reel combo in that price range is your fav for drop shottin?...lure ratings would have to be 1/8oz-1/2oz or something around that. Thanks for any info! Quote

Super User Sam Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 Hank, try to find a rod and reel combo designed for the drop shot. You need a "drop shot specific" rod for drop shotting. You can go with a spinning rig, like me, or a baitcaster rig that some find good for drop shotting. I like a medium or medium heavy "drop shot specific" rod for drop shotting matched to a Shimano 2500 spinning reel and seven pound FC Sniper line. My two drop shot rods are G. Loomis and they work great. Check out each manufacturer's drop shot rods on the Interned to help you build your combo. Quote
John G Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 You do not need a Drop Shop specific rig for Drop Shotting. If you want the traditional Drop Shot ML or M XF Spinning combo you can do that but there is also the Bubba Drop Shot and other options that you probably already have. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted May 23, 2015 Super User Posted May 23, 2015 To echo previous posters, you don't need a specific drop shot rod. Many different rods will work, probably some you already have. A 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 rod, Med to Med/hvy, spinning or casting. Line can vary from 4 to 20 lbs. However, if you've got the hots to buy another rod, a drop shot rod is a good one to get. I'm not really the guy to offer specifics, I generally carry 4, 3 of which are rigged and ready to go and a 4th, a pretty generic spinning rod I can use in a pinch. Most of the time, in the lakes that I fish, which are pretty gnarly cover-wise, I fish the drop shot bubba style, which is a 7 1/2 flipping stick, Curado 50E reel filled with 20 lb Abrazx. My advice would be to play around with drop shot rigging using the rods you got, and then if you feel you need one, go from there. Quote
*Hank Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 I`m pretty sure that i`ll get the shimano compre drop shot spin rod 7`2`` med with a shimano symetre 2500. Quote
Fisher-O-men Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 I`m pretty sure that i`ll get the shimano compre drop shot spin rod 7`2`` med with a shimano symetre 2500. Can't go wrong there, but you might downsize the reel. I like a 1000 size. With that rod you wil have $ left over. The Crucial or Cumara is a nice upgrade. Same length and action. Quote
fisherrw Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I'd get a phenix m1 6'9 light and a shimano stradic ci4 1000 Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted May 24, 2015 Super User Posted May 24, 2015 Are you planning to cast the dropshot away from the boat or drop it straight down? I think a slightly shorter rod is more helpful for the vertical fishing technique. My recommendation would also be for the Avid 6'9" ML/XF paired with a 2500-size Shimano. Personally, I'd use flouro for this technique and I'm not sure the smaller 1000-sized reels would handle fluoro as well as the larger-spool 2500. Quote

I fish from shore so I'll be casting out so I'll get the shimano compre 7'2" med with the symetre 2500 and 6lb red label Fluoro. Quote
ib_of_the_damned Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 I`m pretty sure that i`ll get the shimano compre drop shot spin rod 7`2`` med with a shimano symetre 2500. I have the 7'2" Clarus Drop Shot rod and find that its a good rod, and I paired it up with an Okuma Trio 20. Its a pretty slick combo and easy on the wallet. I also have 10-15lb braid with a 7lb Sunline Sniper leader. Quote
bass1980 Posted May 24, 2015 Posted May 24, 2015 With $350 as your budget I'd get the 2500 ci4+ no doubt. The weight of their 2500 feels like a 1000 series. Less line twist from a 2500 vs a 1000. To me with drop shotting, how you hold the rod n reel having a light setup is more enjoyable to fish. Use the rest of your budget on any recommended rod. Quote

Are you gonna spool the whole reel with red label or are you going to use braid with a fluoro leader? I would not recommend using straight red label on a spinning reel, it will not end well. Quote

ColdSVT Posted May 25, 2015 Posted May 25, 2015 X3 on the flouro I use 10# PP to a 8 or 6# flouro leader on my 2500 stradic ci4+....works fantastic! No twist! Quote

I've been spooling straight red label on to my current spinning combo and have had no trouble with line twist...it's a 1000 size shimano would i have more trouble with a 2500 size shimano? Quote
