Orra S Vs Pflueger President? Spinning

Like the title says, I can't decide between an Abu Garcia Orra S or a Pflueger President. I also cant decide what to pair them with, as i've read reviews on the Orra combo and a lot of people say that the tips break off their rods, but the one year warrenty is a plus. I'd like to keep it under $70 for the reels (hoping theres some other reels I havent noticed) or $120 for rod and reel. I plan on mostly LM/SM with an occasional muskie so I was thinking on the bigger side but not too big.

I have very little experience with the Orra but the President is pretty tough to beat at that price point. As long as you aren't specifically targeting muskie and only catching them as an incidental catch, you should be fine with a 30 size President. If you're planning on fishing larger baits just for muskie you'll want at least the 35 if not the 40 size, but that's going to be big and cumbersome for bass fishing.

I have a 6940 for bass fishing and it seems fine. What else would the 6940 be for? I don't find it too heavy.

 

To the OP... I bought my Berkley Lightning Rod Shock spinning rod at Walmart. They were $40 there and $50 at BPS. I bought it at Walmart for the $3 extended warranty. If you can get the President (or any reel) there with such a cheap extended warranty, that would be good. My rod is a 7' medium and I like the combo I have. I fish a lot of soft plastics and it works well. Supposedly the Shock series rods were designed for Superline and that is what I have on mine.

Sorry if I'm muddying the water for you but I'm going against the grain and saying Abu Orra S over the President.  I bought an Orra S (30 size) about 4 years ago, this is the older black/red model and I've beat the crap out of it, never really maintained it, it makes noise when I reel.  But the drag is still smooth and it's been a workhorse.  2 years ago I bought a new rod and put a 30 size President on it.  Thought it was great, lighter reel than the Orra S and smooth, nice drag. It made some noise when reeling right out of the package but didn't worry about it.  Within 4 months (about 200 hours of fishing) the bail stopped working.

 

I didn't contact Pflueger about it or look at getting it fixed because it was "only" a $60 reel.  But based on my experience with both reels I will never buy a President again.

I have both a president and a Orra S and honestly they both are pretty good. It's apples and apples in this case at this price point. Get the one that feels better to you and is CHEAPER. haha

Be aware that the Lightning Rod and Lightning Rod Shock are different rods.

They're both Pure Fishing products so the basic quality and much of the tooling will be the same. The Pflueger offerings are usually less expensive on a feature for feature basis than the ABU brand. The President is a good bang for the buck.

Presidents hands down! FYI : I've seen a combo at Meijer with a 30 or 35 (reel) on a 7' Medium IM6 or IM7 (rod) for $79.99! Seem like a pretty good setup for the price point

Not saying it can't be used for bass, it's just unnecessary and a bit bigger than what you really need. The line capacity is also much higher than what is needed for bass so you either have to put a bunch of backing on or waste a bunch of line. At almost 11 ounces it's pretty heavy for a bass fishing spinning reel.

As for bass (and mostly concerned about action - small/average fish and maybe an occasional lunker) and the President line, what model would you think is adequate?

I use both the 25 and the 30 sizes for bass depending on what techniques I'm going to be using and have never felt a need to go to a larger sized spinning reel when bass was the only fish I was going to be pursuing. If you're fishing in are where you might come in contact with larger game fish like stripers or muskie that could run off a significant amount of line then you may very well want the larger size though.
