JGBassinAL Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Is there a good rod building kit out there that includes everything I would need to build a rod? All of my rods are customs built by someone else, but I've really been wanting to build one on my own. If there is one that includes almost everything I need, let me know what else I would need with it. Thanks! Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted April 20, 2015 Super User Posted April 20, 2015 Mud hole has a complete kit now that has everything but the blank I think Quote

Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 Kits are ok if you have no idea where to start, but the biggest part of custom builds is picking your own components. As for tools and supplies, thread, adhesive epoxy and thread finish are all you need. I'd turn the first couple by hand before deciding if the craft is for you or not. Plus you get a birds eye view of how epoxy behaves as it sets. 1 Quote

You should really have read and researched enough that you understand what components you need before you start and have a basic idea about how to proceed. They might be different now but last time I looked at the kits they didn't have components I would ever use on a build. If you're going to put in the time and effort, you should build something you will be happy with. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted April 20, 2015 Posted April 20, 2015 I bought one of the CRB kits from Mudhole. I think it was like $140. Comes with just about everything except for razor blades, larger reamers, files, and maybe some other small things. The thread tensioner seems a little sketchy, but it works, so I guess it will do until I decide to upgrade. Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 21, 2015 Super User Posted April 21, 2015 I disagree with those who say kits won't cut it. The kits will make a rod that looks just like the rods you see at any big box store and all the Mudhole kits have decent blanks. I think it is wise to start with a kit that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to determine if rod building is for you before making a big investment that may be wasted. Mudhole has dozens of kits that will make a very good rod. You can even get camo, that's sort of special. Many use the aero style reel seat that is the current darling of many custom rod builders. I suggest you get a Mudhole print catalog, read all the building info at the front of the catalog, and if still interested, choose a kit and build it. Expect your first build to be something less than expert, but it will fish just fine. Your skill will increase with every build. Your most likely significant problem will occur if you don't mix your epoxy properly, so go to the Flex Coat videos (search for flex coat epoxy mix video) and see how they do it. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 I'm not looking for a kit to include the rod and all components. I am very familiar with rod blanks and all of the components, just wanted to know if there was a "good" kit with all the tools needed to build a rod. Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 22, 2015 Super User Posted April 22, 2015 Sorry to report that kits don't include tools, and I don't know of a "group of tools" for sale. I think you'll have to figure out what you need and buy them separately. I think the Mudhole catalog covers what you need pretty well, but if not, a call to them will probably get you some really good help. Quote
EvanT123 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 A starter kit with many of the things you need to get started is a good idea but I can almost guarantee you will be making a trip to the hardware/craft store. Quote
basscatcher8 Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 I just bought the tool kit off of mud hole for 150 bucks. Comes with the manual equipment for wrapping guides and an electric rod dryer as well as all the hand tools 4 spools of thread and razor blades and all the epoxy and everything. That along with everything for my first build are arriving tomorrow. Going to start out building an easy crappie rod. I chose not to go the kit route for the rod just cause I figured I'd see what I could come up with and what parts I'll be without lol Quote
Batson Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 How much do you want to spend.. That is where you need to look first. If your going to get into rod building and want to spend the money, doing it right first is always best. I would hate anyone to spend money and not get the right equipment. Just depends again on how much you want to spend and if this is something you want to pursue. You have stated you know about blanks and components, it sounds like your going to be serious. Here is a variety of different price levels of equipment and tools. If your going to go the power wrapper route, I would go to the ALPS power wrapper with the upgraded chuck. Its the best tool before you get into a Renzetti. FYI Renzetti is one of the best, but it carries a $1000 price tag. http://alpsforecast.com/product-category/gear-components/tools-supplies/ Quote
