Hey Everyone,

I have been dressing my own treble hooks for a little while now and have decided to start doing bucktail jigs and dressing large trebles with bucktail and hackle. My questions are, what do you guys use for head cement brands? laquer or water based? How do you apply your head cement?

Any and all opinions or suggestions are readily welcome, Thanks in advance for any help given.

super glue hands down!

just put a drop or two of super glue on the threads and then spread it around the threads with the tip of the nozzle.

kicks the crap out of any head cement i've ever used.

Why Super glue???? All I can see is it soaking into the hair and making it too hard.  If and when I use it, I use regular fly tying head cement and it works fine.  If you tie them right you don't need it.

When doing large bucktail jigs make sure to get jig head tying thread or you can use rod winding thread.  Another option is GSP Gel Spun thread which is very strong.  I've tried Kevlar thread and don't like it for bucktails depending on what hair you're using it can cut right through it if you pull too hard.

Small panfish jigs I use regular fly tying thread 6/0, 8/0 or 3/0.

not true. no matter how good of a tier you are, your threads can still get ripped on fishs' teeth or just get frayed from regular use.

why superglue?

because its freakin strong thats why!  ;D

it wont go into the hair as long as you dont put any right on the hair. if you only put superglue on the threads, it soaks into the threads but it doesnt soak into the hair like you're thinking (it doesnt run up the hair similar to how water will run up a paintbrush if you dip the ends of the bristles into the water)

superglue will make your thread wraps rock hard.

and x2 at getting jig tying thread. you need something pretty strong when you are tying down all that thick bucktail. GSP will be great, but its pretty expensive as far as thread goes. if you're careful you might be able to get away with using 3/0 thread.

Sally Hanson's Hard as Nails (clear finger nail polish)

I have used the clear nail polish for tying my trebles, size 4,6, and 8's for bass plugs. I know this is a Bass Forum but I am a Sportsman and up here in Vermont we are coming into the season where the Bass really die off in biting and we switch over to fishing for Northern Pike. You want to talk about hard hitting monsters that will really give you a fight? Fish for Northern's! I really hate them when I lose an expensive Bass plug to their teeth so sometimes they do tick me off. BUt when you are targeting them, Pike, they can be alot of fun. The funny thing is, you go out to cathc them with large Musky Killers by Mepps and end up catching Bass too, like yesterday!

Killing frost here this morning, 36 degrees!

X2

Way cheaper, easier to apply and doesn't dry out all of a sudden.

Here are some color patterns that have worked for me in bucktail.
