Devcon vs glass resin

Am I missing something here?  I have been using fiberglass resin to seal my baits. (the proto types)

So far, no sealing issues.

It just seems Devcon is so much more expensive than glass resin so why is it the staple of most of the builders?  I mean, I could do hundreds of lures with a $9 can of glass resin.  I have a 5 gall drum of the stuff from the car audio days so it was a natural choice for me.

Someone please educate me!!

What exactly are you using? Does it give you a glossy coat? And how long does it take to cure?

my guess is that devcon is much easier to find than glass resin.

i have never seen glass resin in any store, then again, i have never really looked either... :-?

devcon works great, and it is easily obtainable, so that is why most people use it.

keep us updated on how the glass resin performs though. if it works just as well as devcon and is as cheap as you say, i might switch over to resin!

Devcon is easy to find, hard as a rock, and so simple it's stupid proof.

But it's not the best top coat out there, you have to find what works best for you and fills your needs.

Does this glass resin dry clear, does it yellow over time, is it water proof?   A few questions that need answers.

I just coated my first batch of baits with flex coat and I make be making a switch from devcon.

Glass resin is easier to get than devcon. Both are very available. Resin can be bought in anyy home depot, or automotive store, shoot, even wal-mart carries it.

It's about 1/5th the price.

No yellowing

I have been painting over the top of it but most baits don't even get a color,.....(you know why,lol,...because it DOESN'T matter!!!lol)

My last few baits (proto types 15,17,19 and 20) are "wood" colored,lol. Tan is a natural color right? lol

Anyway, if you paint first and then do the resin, it just strips the paint. Maybe this is the issue.

It is designed to be sanded and then painted OVER and then clear coated.  Remember, this is mainly an automotive product.  (but the fish like it when it's applied to something that's 15" long and snaking through the water )

sounds if water based paints don't like the glass resin.    Why not use that as a sealer then clear with an epoxy.   I working with Flex Coat right now and so far it's been pretty good.   I really like the long pot life but it is a really thin clear coat.   Need a least two coats on the cranks but it is crystal clear.  

Devcon will not give you a lot of working time to coat baits as big as the ones you are making.

Nothing good happens when thinning D2T, or most any other epoxy, except it is easier to brush.

If you want longer pot life Flex-coat, Envirotex lite or Nuluster55 are better choices. If your set up to shoot solvent based paints then automotive clear is a good choice but a quart is about the smallest amount you can buy, big bucks. You might try a coat of Createx clear, allow to dry 24 hours, then glass resin, it would be worth a try if you have a lot of resin on hand.

I also have 1 gallon of Sikkens and 1 gallon of Glasurit clear coats.  Again, the car audio stuff.  Problem is I have no place to spray anymore since moving.

i havent had any problems when thinning devcon with denatured alcohol.

if glass resin strips paint, that would be the reason why nobody uses it for lure building

have any of you guys noticed lately like in the past 3-4 months the devcon one side of the package the material is not clear any more it has a yellow cast to it  i have not bought any from wallmart thinking it is old stock.  have they changed it or is it old stuff? :-/

lbh   if i want to slow down the pot time on devcon i put the mixture on ice the cold slows it down

yup its weird i know but that is how its supposed to be.

devcon two ton (which cures clear and will not yellow over time) has a yellow pigment to it in the tube

devcon 5 min epoxy (which will yellow over time) does not have a yellow hue in the tube

thats just the way it is.... :-?

Devcon yellows big time and I've got boxes full baits to prove it. Devcon yellow due to it's low heat breaking point, put in a hot car, boat, shop or any place and the bait will get a yellow tent. Don't ever put a set of golf clubs together with it or you'll start slinging heads off.

Here are two examples of yellow devcon. These two baits have been hanging in the shop for 2 weeks.

when in the body shop business and sold out i kept some of the base coat clear coat  clear from r&m dealer  but it takes 3-4 hrs to dry  is that what happens to your stuff  in the glass resin are you talking about the clear filler that you add the liquid hardner to as with fiberglass cloth that you would repair a corvette  with.

minus the cloth, yes.  Resin and hardner.  Drying time is roughly an hour but it gets a good kick after about 30 mins.  (I use a bit more hardener than suggested)
