Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 My mall is getting a new Field & Steam store as well as a new Dicks. How is Field & Stream's fishing selection comparatively? Am I looking at some new cool stuff or a bunch of $0.99 baits? Quote
Topwaterspook Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 Dick's and Field and Stream are the same parent company. I would think their prices would be very close to the same , considering the close proximity. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted March 26, 2015 Super User Posted March 26, 2015 It may have more selection of outdoor stuff... The outdoor (camping, hunting, fishing) selection at my local DSG is terrible. I will check now that it is spring, but I'm not going in with high expectations. Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 I'm buddies with the lodge guys, of course, they said they will have 3x as much display space for fishing and hunting. Idk how much of it is gonna be fishing, but the more the better, i hope. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted March 26, 2015 Super User Posted March 26, 2015 Field and Stream actually has a pretty impressive selection of stuff and their prices aren't too bad either. Be sure to join their rewards program. You'll get $10 back for every $300 you spend, plus they'll mail you various coupons all the time. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted March 26, 2015 Super User Posted March 26, 2015 I assume you are referring to the new bldg going up at Market Place mall? It'll probably drive the Gander Mountain store out of business. THAT store can't be doing well. Even on weekends I don't see a lot of cars in the lot and it's never very busy. Of course, I am not sure Field and Stream will have much better a go of it. I think, sadly, that they tend to grow larger than the areas "carrying capacity." Any store that pays attention to trends and market offerings can provide a decent selection. As to whether they price them right or offer incentives will determine (in part) if they stay afloat. 1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 26, 2015 Author Posted March 26, 2015 Yessir I am! I feel the same about gander, I like their selection, but nothing is ever on sale, they dont even have a "bargain cave." I think I might be 30% of Gander's business. 1 Quote
mattk22 Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 Great store. We have one I. Columbus Ohio and I love it. Better then our small footprint Cabelas. Quote
Cgrinder Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 The one near Detroit is very good. They have a variety of baits and a lot of high end rods and reels. Quote

justhere Posted March 27, 2015 Posted March 27, 2015 There is both a Gander and Field and Stream near me, and while the selection at both seems close, the Gander has better prices usually. Plus the Gander has a couple bargain bins with all kinds of lures in it. Quote

OUR Gander Mtn has few really good sales and their "bargain bin" (if you want to call it that) is pretty pitiful. Of course I'm probably coming at it differently than some. I HAVE most of what I need already and if I can't find a really good deal on something, I walk away. Quote
Robert Riley Posted March 28, 2015 Author Posted March 28, 2015 kinda funny you say that every time I go in I always find stuff on sale or BOGO deals We have a bogo bin, and it's just some trolling rapala's and some storm swimbaits, that's all it's been in the 8 months it's been open. I'd like to see something like terminal tackle, some plastics, or maybe some other stuff like tackle boxes or reels. Quote

Just a month ago they had BOGO 50% off on Zoom and they had I believe it was 20% on spro baits Quote
ItsTig Posted March 28, 2015 Posted March 28, 2015 The Gander Mountain in Champaign is definitely lacking any real bargains. I don't know if it is because they are a newer store or what. I think there were some trigger X plastics for like 2.97 instead of 4.99, that was probably the best bargain bin item. The "bargain" cranks that are like 6 bucks were on sale for $3. I think one kinda caught my eye, but didn't get my money. I overheard one of the associates telling another customer they sent a bunch of stuff back instead of marking it down. Not sure if that's a store decision or not. The Springfield one has been much better the few times I've been there, as far as real bargain bins. Finding 7" YUM Dingers in there once was like Christmas. Anyways, I kind of missed the topic with all that. I am looking forward to the Field & Stream. Always good to have options, if it sucks, natural selection will take care of it. As mentioned, doesn't seem like Gander can afford to lose any customers around here, place is lucky to have 4 cars in the lot, ever. Quote

Maybe it has to do with how long they have been open as well. Ours has been open for a few years, while the F&S has been about 6 months. Either way, unless I really need something, I just wait until I get to the Sportsman Liquidators in Chambersburg, they have the best prices from what I seen, though the selection seems to be hit and miss from my experience. Though I should say I just bought a new trolling motor from the F&S, they had them on sale. Quote
AQUA VELVA Posted March 29, 2015 Posted March 29, 2015 The new F&S opened up to pretty good reviews in Troy, MI. To bad it's a three hour drive from me. We have a place called Northwoods Outlet near me that has a huge fishing dept. so I don't feel to deprived. Quote
