Joedodge Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 A lot ofm he yum and gambler baits I fish are scented already. But I've been looking into megastrike, hog tonic, and berkley. I get covering up our scent after we touch it but doesn't it just wash off after the first cast? Is it ok to mix a scent with pre scented baits? Quote
Smokinal Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 That's why I like a scent with a paste-like carrier or an oil based scent. I feel those will cling better and stay on longer. And yes on adding Megastrike to pre-scented brands of plastic. Quote
Joedodge Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 Oh ok very cool thanks for the reply. I've never messed with any kind of scents im a newbie to that. Quote
Matthew2000 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 Mega strike will stick for a long time basically until you don't want it on anymore. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 We aren't talking about hunting big game here ( whitetail, elk, moose, ) scent control IS vital when big game hunting.. As far as washing hands are concerned, ( as it apply's to a fish smelling ) Is far fetched IMO. A cooked in scent doesn't hurt, ( Garlic, Power bait ) a goo applied to a plastic bait like megastrike won't hurt.. How much does it really help? I cannot say, but I do quite well with scented & unscented baits. I loath the smell of elaztech plastic, however the fish couldn't care less... Quote
Joedodge Posted March 21, 2015 Author Posted March 21, 2015 Lol I hear Ya I get we aren't hunting big game. Quote
Super User WRB Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 They don't wash off your hands, clothing or boat carpet! Reapply as needed, never put scent into a full bag of worms unless you plan on using all them that day, do it one at a time. Don't add additional scents to Berkely a Gulp or Power baits, it may cause a unwanted chemical reaction, stiffing the soft plastic. Tom Quote
Smokinal Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I won't usually start out using a scent but if the bite is slow or they aren't really eating a bait well (just pecking at it, spitting it out before hookset, not holding a bait long) then I will use a scent. And I typically use Megastrike which technically isn't a scent but an amino acid paste which I feel helps fish hold onto a bait longer so you can get a good hookset on him. Quote
Bruce424 Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I usually use it as a scent cover up. If I go straight to the lake after work usually use garlic powder or some other bait fish or craw scent. rub it on my hands so when I touch the lure or jig it doesn't get "contaminated". Hah Quote

Super User Catch and Grease Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 JJ's magic definitely doesn't wash off.... That stuff is on there for good! 1 Quote
zeth Posted March 21, 2015 Posted March 21, 2015 I use scent to make fish hold on longer not to attract them. You can mix and match scents. I do and have no problems. JJ's magic is great. It penetrates and stays put. I am using it less and less however because I've had one to many methiolate explosions. Also don't necessarily believe the hype about any particular scent. They all have differences and they all work in their own way. The newest craze amino acid. I guarantee almost every single scent on the market has amino acids in it. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 The OP asked if it washed off - Seems that although some does, depending on which product you use, there is always a residue let behind; even after some time. Also, I've mixed up to three scents together, there was no smoking or bad reactions and I even still managed to catch a few fish. Whether they "work" or not - can't say for sure. But they definitely don't hurt your chances, meaning I do not believe a scent is preventing me from getting bit. Megastrike seems like one of the best I've tried and it goes onto just about everything I throw. A-Jay 1 Quote

Super User Cgolf Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 Have used atlas mikes and rage gel scent. Personally have had rage last 50 minutes on a Crankbait and both Alta's mikes and rage last more than 30 casts on soft plastics. While I don't believe I get more strikes because of scent, I feel they hold the bait longer and appear to hit it a second or third time if I miss them when scent is applied. Gel scents are where it's at, have two more brands I will be trying this spring. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted March 21, 2015 Super User Posted March 21, 2015 So that's how you are putting a whoopin on me! Perhaps - but what might be of particular interest to you is - I'm using your Megastrike . . . . A-Jay 2 Quote
Hogsticker Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 I stopped putting megastrike on my hard baits. It's very difficult to remove, especially if you apply it in the heat. I soak some of my soft baits in smelly jelly, but that's about the extent of it. Quote
wytstang Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Two I use is MegaStrikes original and BioEdge semi-solid wand in shad & craw fish scent as both stay on for many many cast. Quote
Mccallister25 Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 JJ's magic definitely doesn't wash off.... That stuff is on there for good! Yep. Love the stuff. Quote
Super User eyedabassman Posted March 22, 2015 Super User Posted March 22, 2015 JJ's magic definitely doesn't wash off.... That stuff is on there for good! JJ's gets my vote also! JJ's works into the plastic without hurting the plastic! I think it is the best long lasting sent on the market!!!! Quote
RanndomUndead Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 i dont use scents very often, like 2-3 times a year really...but when i do i like to mix Mend-It and the scent in a container, apply it to the top of the bait, and then close it in a bag for however long. Pretty much marinates and impregnates at the same time Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted March 22, 2015 Posted March 22, 2015 Hmm if you look over the past years you will find new scents in the market stating amino acids I have gone to many shows including ICAST. Where I was in a shirt and tie and asked the manufactures and inventors of these scents/attractants which Aminos are in there and what was their significance. I would say 99% of them had no clue So I call bs on them. If you look at our history I would have to say Megastrike is the first to proclaim the "Amino Acid" concept. I know what's in there and I know specifically why each one of them are for. I learned how to develope the "carrier" and make them water soluble. So basically you are attracting them by olfaction / smell. Chemo/gustation = taste =retention So Berkley makes a great product and I always give credit when due but always look at science and options. Ask anyone that watched me at the Bassmasters Classic doing demonstratiins with it. It will make you a believer. 7 Quote

I'll tell you this Bobby, over the past several years, along with Braided line - I believe Megastrike to be a most significant & positive contributor to my own fishing success. So, I'm on board. Bobby Uhrig Posted March 23, 2015 Posted March 23, 2015 Well thank you for that compliment Believe me it's always in my boat and tackle bag. I see people that say when the bite is slow then they add an "attractant ". Why would you not use it all the time. You could be missing fish. Now why would you do that 2 Quote
