I just recently bought some Gammy EWG treble hooks (size 6) and some split rings.  I had been needing to replace some old rusty hooks on some of my cranks.  Well, it took me forever (like 3 hours) to change out the hooks and rings on 5 baits.  I had out the screwdriver, pliers, etc.  Is there a better and faster way to do this job.  Lastly, the hooks I replaced were put on Mann's -1's and some other smaller cranks that only dive 2-4 feet.  I noticed that espically the -1's the front treble was larger than the back.  Is it ok to keep them the same size or should I still have the front hook larger?

3 hours for for 5 baits??? I should take you no longer then 15 min. to do this. I dont use any tools at all just my fingernails to pry open the split rings. Most crankbaits have a larger front treble and you should keep it that way. The smaller hook could lower your hookup ratio. :)

Check around, they make split ring pliers. They are like needle nose pliers but have points to seperate and hold the split ring while you slide the hook off/on. They will save lots of broken finger nails and speed up the job. I know local Academy and BPS carry them. Here is link to 1 of the 3 models BPS carries: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&partNumber=27365&hvarTarget=search&cmCat=SearchResults.

Also, I always try to match new hook size to what was on the bait.  Be careful, larger hooks & EWG hooks will tangle together, affecting bait action and hooking ability.

I'll be the third vote for the BPS split ring pliers. I got mine two years ago and it's now a cinch to change the trebles.

Good luck
