Hello,

For the first time this season, I plan on trying a Fluoro leader.

I use Power Pro braided line, 10 pound test.  Small pond fishing mainly.

Is the Alberto Knot the knot to use for attaching the fluoro leader to the braided line ?

Are there others to consider ?

Pros and cons ?

And, is a Cinch knot still practical for a Fluoro leader at the lure end ?

Thanks,

Bob

Alberto is the only one I use. I do 8-10 wraps up and 4-5 wraps down. If tied right it makes a really slim knot. You can use other connecting knots, though.

As for the lure end knot, I use a San Diego Jam with fluorocarbon. Again, you can use other knots here.

Look at the Albright knot. It's easy to tie and comes through your rod tip easy enough if you reel in the leader.

Also as a side note. There is a forum (rods reels line & knots) where you're likely to get more responses.

I always use a double uni to connect two lines of same diameter.

You are better off using a premium mono like Maxima Ultra, P-Line CXX, Trilene XT or Big Gsme, etc than FC for a leader. Contrary to popular belief FC doesn't aid you as a leader, same or larger diameter as mono with weaker knot strength.

Why use a leader with 10 lb braid?

Not only that but breaking off a snag.  I will break off fish too large to land or too long a fight.  Better to break off to avoid killing a fish that you might be throwing back anyway.

I use only 4 very simple knots for every species I catch.

Braid to leader, (1) Albright 7 wraps up and 0 down

Leader to lure, jigs (2) ordinary clinch 5 or 6 wraps, hard lures a (3) loopknot

Braid to swivel,(4) improved clinch with 7 wraps and the final step gets 2 wraps not 1.

Haven't found a need for any other knots.  What ever knot one is comfortable with that's the go to knot, just tie it right.

The OP is fishing a small pond with 10 lb PowerPro that is .007 dia or equal to most 4 lb mono or FC.

Braid cuts through weeds or grass good, the leader doesn't. Knot strength at the braid to leader is weaker than the leader strength and weaker at the hook or lure. Small dia FC like Seagar or Sunline .007 = 6 lb test.

To equal 10 lb test the FC the dia is approaching .010, nearly 40% larger and weaker at the Union and lure knot than 10 braid. Bass are not line shy fish, especially in a small pond.

Just curious why adding a FC leader, other than breaking off easier, is an advantage for the OP, who must buy a spool of FC for a leader. Mono is available in small leader spools for example, FC leader spools are limited in sizes and brands.

Whatever knot you choose, practice tying it!

I only use three knots.  Blood knot to connect lines to leaders.  The clinch knot for line to lures.  The other knot is the Rapala knot, for walking baits or lures with intense side to side action. YouTube any knots you need to learn.  Always remember the simpler the better.

Uni to Uni when and if I use a leader.

The knot is larger than an Albright or Alberto for sure but if you don't use it on a rod with micro guides or just keep it below the tip when casting,

it doesn't matter.

I'm interested to see some blood knot users.  I used to use it and liked it...but have recently been using alberto, largely due to reading from all the alberto fans on here.  Anyone try both and compare the two?  Any reason/time when one is better than the other?  Thank you.
