Penguino Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Has anybody ever used braid as a leader? I have 10 yards of braid leftover, and I was wondering if I should use it as a leader to some mono. Quote
Crappiebasser Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Why would you want a braid leader? 1 Quote
Penguino Posted February 21, 2015 Author Posted February 21, 2015 Because I have some leftover braid I don't want to waste. Why would you want a braid leader? Quote
Mattfrom_NJ Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 Some people use braid as backing. Your leftover braid might be better suited there 1 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted February 21, 2015 Super User Posted February 21, 2015 No reason you can't use it as a leader. But I can't imagine one why you'd want to. I use extra braid to repair my kids' school backpacks (when they leave a lunch in it and the dog(s) shred them apart to find the awesome smelling food left therein, LOL). Quote

Definitely better used to hang up garland at Christmas; strap corn husks to the mailbox around Halloween; hang the bird feeder; repair any cloth item; stretch a span of it across your garage to hang jigheads on when painting them; fix the ping pong table net; practical jokes around the house on April 1st; school projects; and many more Of course I have never done any of these things, just read about them... tnt2671 Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 well look at the bright side you filled your reel and have 30ft leftover of nice strong household string Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted February 21, 2015 Super User Posted February 21, 2015 String for odd jobs. Depending on the diameter it can be used to tie jigs, if you want it for a fishing use. Quote

Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 21, 2015 Super User Posted February 21, 2015 Use it to reinforce jig and spinnerbait skirts. The rubber bands that most companies use tend to wear out. 2 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted February 21, 2015 Super User Posted February 21, 2015 No good reason to use it as a leader. Poor abrasion resistance and high visibility. Toss it. Quote

I.rar Posted February 21, 2015 Posted February 21, 2015 I've used plenty of left over braid for tying things together, sewing ripped back packs or hanging pictures. I do like the practical joke idea but getting tangled in 30+lb braid does not sound fun for the person caught in the stuff. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted February 22, 2015 Super User Posted February 22, 2015 There's a guy on another thread who needs a new rope for his trolling motor, maybe you could help him out? 1 Quote
Patrick Morrow Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 it is better to leave it unused or just throw it away instead of using it in unnecessary places. Low abrasion resistance + potentially more visible under water will not make braid good leader. Quote
Pinoy_Basser Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 You can donate to kids using a cane pole and bobber type fishing. I usually do this when I see some kids fishing around where I fish. Quote
BigSkyBasser Posted February 23, 2015 Posted February 23, 2015 I guess if topwater fishing for Pike it would be best used as a leader. Go try it out in Canada and let us know. Quote

For any sizable fish I want a little bit of shock, braid doesn't furnish that. Toothy critters can easily bite thru braid, one thing we have down here is fish with sharp teeth. There are species that will attack a swivel as quick as the lure, which is quite evident when just the braid comes back bare with no swivel or leader. If a strike snaps the line you'll feel it, cut off you won't, just have a limp line. Quote

X2 tie them on there so you don't open up your jig box to find that a bunch of rubber bands broke and now you have a bunch of naked jigs Quote
