JGBassinAL Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I have 0 interest in Shimano anymore these days. I'll probably get sued for saying that, but its the truth. What Shimano reels have you owned that make you not like Shimano? I'm just curious. I only use Shimano, but there isn't a brand that I don't like or wouldn't try. I might even pick up a couple of the Pro Qualifiers for some beater combos. Quote

I've owned some good Shimano reels.. I still fish an old Corsair that I like. My thing is that all of my combos are 'beater' combos so to speak. I'm strapped for cash and want something that offers value for the money, and is feature filled. I'm sure if I had some more money, I'd be willing to give there reels a try. I may have to see if I can pick up a Curado I or a Chronarch if they ever run them on closeout and that may change my mind. Quote

Honestly my favorite reel that Shimano ever made is the E series Curado and you can get them for around $100-$120 used if you ever got the itchin to buy a Shimano. Also, I didn't mean anything bad when I said beater combo. I have a full-time job and am blessed to be able to fish and afford some nicer stuff. Never spend more than you can afford, and from what I've read on the PQ then that would be a good option for you. But like I said, if you ever have around $100 to spend on a reel then I would look for a used Curado E or Tatula. 2 Quote
TorqueConverter Posted February 1, 2015 Posted February 1, 2015 I have never been a fan of house branded reels or reels with somebody's name on it. With that said, the Pro Qualifier use to be a "one and done" reel. Meaning, you fished it for a year and it was just about toast. I base this on an old fishing buddy that would buy 5 new ones every year at the annual BPS sale and use them for tournament fishing. He worked/abused them hard but buy the end of the year, they would sound like coffee grinders and work when they felt like it. If the Pro Qualifier has become a good value, then BPS/Pure Fishing must have improved it over the years. Every reel out there aside from the Daiwa and Shimano stuff is either a Korean or a Chinese "your name here" reel. I'm guessing your old fishing buddy was using PQs back when they were Silstars. The Doyo ones are much better. Quote

Super User Jeff H Posted February 2, 2015 Super User Posted February 2, 2015 No problem throwing #5 Shad Raps. Wow. That is some hefty credit you're throwing at that reel! Quote
Brent Bartman Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 The PQ IS a decent reel for 50 bucks not for the normal 100 sticker tho. go for the jm Quote
TorqueConverter Posted February 2, 2015 Posted February 2, 2015 If I remember, Silstar used to make Pinnacles, and the old BPS Bassmaster reels, correct? Correct. The Silstar stuff was pretty good back in the day. They didn't hold up like Shimanos or even the modern Doyo stuff but it was pretty good for the $ at the time. Features such as ball bearings, anodized, cross drilled aluminum spool and centrifugal breaking was hard to come by on reel for less than $100. 1 Quote

Super User new2BC4bass Posted February 2, 2015 Super User Posted February 2, 2015 Wow. That is some hefty credit you're throwing at that reel! Jeff, I have 6# mono on both Carbonlites. One is mounted on a 6'9" Falcon Expert Light. The other is mounted on a 7' ML Crankin' Stick. The TD-Z 105H is mounted on an older 7' ML Fenwick HMG. I bought the rod and reel as a pair. The seller claimed to have no problem with 1/16 oz. with this combo. Actually I think he said he could throw even lighter, but don't quote me on that. I have had all 3 at the same time at the ramp where I practice casting and used one after the other. The handle on the 105H clicked in and out when I got it. Apologies to Mike, but I sent it to Ian Shield as I had read that he was very good with Daiwas. I hadn't ever tried Ian before, so I gave him a shot. He tuned it, installed ABEC7 bearings and a Carbontex drag. The seller of the Carbonlites said he had his choice of several that had been refurbished by the factory. I haven't had anything done to them. It isn't very exact comparing them on the water, but the best I could tell distance was very close for all three combos. Quote
