Monofilament means single filament. All fishing lines today that are not braided yarn are monofilament line.

The term Mono has been used to describe a single filament line manufactured from a polymer known as nylon, so mono is synonymously with single filament nylon line.

Copolymer line is also a monofilament or single filament line, the polymers being a mixture or blend of 2 polymers, nylon and another polymer.

Fluorocarbon polymer line is another monofilament or single filament line, made from fluorocarbon in lieu of nylon.

Hybrid co extruded line is a single filament line, made by extruding fluorocarbon over nylon.

Mono = nylon monofilament.

Copolymer = 2 blended polymer monofilament line.

Fluorocarbon = fluorocarbon monofilament line.

Hybrid= co extruded fluorocarbon over nylon core monofilament line.

Actually Tom, fluorocarbon and nylon are both polymers, and any line containing fluoro & nylon IS a copolymer line.

A copolymer line can be a combination of different nylon polymers or a combination of nylon and fluorocarbon.

The word hybrid however is more specific, because it tells us that both nylon & fluorocarbon are present.

In other words, all 'hybrid' lines are copolymer, but not all 'copolymer' lines are hybrid.

My pet peeve is the number of excellent anglers and authors who use the words “Nylon” & “Mono” interchangeably.

 

 

What Is Mono Line?

The term "monofilament" is self-explanatory, it refers to any line

comprised of a 'single-filament' (as distinguished from 'braided' line).

The most commonly used monofilament materials are Nylon, Fluorocarbon,

Bioabsorbable Polymer and Copolymer (which is any combination of the first 3 polymers).

There is one caveat however:  not all 'copolymer' lines are 'monofilament' lines.

A copolymer line with a separate core and sheath is known as a 'cofilament' line.

A hybrid like Yo-Zuri isn't a copolymer it's made by a process known as co extrusion, the polymers are not mixed or blended like a copolymer.

The acronym Nylon comes from a joint polymer program between the United States and England, New York-London polymer, NyLon. Since it's development during WWII, Nylon or polyimide has been through several decades of further refinement to enhance it's properties, UV, flame resistance, etc. the fact PI is amorphous allows it to wet and bond to or blend with some semi crystalline polymers like fluorocarbon.

The difference for purposes of fishing line between a copolymer and hybrid is blended, 2 polymers mixed together and co extruded; 1 polymer extruded over the other have a core with outer layer.

More useless information that only a handful of anglers would care about.

Keep in mind when trying to condition your fishing line that FC does not wet or absorb line conditioners as it is not hygroscopic and that includes hybrid with FC, copolymers will absorb line conditioners like Nylon will.

The scientific name for ‘fluorocarbon’ is “Polyvinylidene fluoride”, written simply as PVDF.

The “P” in PVDF ('poly'), underscores the fact that fluorocarbon is a polymer,

and any line containing both nylon & fluorocarbon is a 'copolymer' line.  That's all she wrote.

Roger do you think the anglers will recognize fluoropolymer in lieu of fluorocarbon line or use PVDF. If we start talking in acronyms like PI, only polymer engineers will understand our topic.

When posting on topics I rarely research information, if I don't know the topic from memory wouldn't post it.

I am retiring the end of this year after 50 years as a engineer in the aerospace business. Hopefully will spend more time fishing and far less time on this site, debating nonsense like this while my Christmas prime rib dinner is cooking
