Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 5, 2014 Super User Posted December 5, 2014 Lets say you have a typical 2500 series spinning reel and you want to be more precise / cost effective in using braid , so you add mono backing to the reel first : What is the most effective way to judge how much braid to add to backing line so you don't make the mistake of adding too much or too little braid to the reel (underfill / overfill) ? ...I'm sure those of you long time users of braid + mono backing on a spinning reel have a good technique for judging how much braid to mono line backing ratio is ideal (approx. 40 yrds of braid as a top coat with mono line backing ??) ... Thanks in advance for your replies - I'm sure their MUST be an easy trick to solve this issue / topic !! Quote
John G Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 First, fill your spool with cheap mono that is roughly the same diameter as the braid that you are going to use. Then tie on the heaviest lure that you will throw with this combo. After you make your longest cast, pull an equal amount of mono off the spool that equals your cast and refill with braid. 3 Quote

Good answer John. Sometimes the simplest solutions just escape me. No comments about age now....lol. Hootie 1 Quote

Same suggestion, but I don't like ever feeling the knot. I would suggest doubling your maximum cast. Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted December 5, 2014 Super User Posted December 5, 2014 I normally put just enough mono on the spool so that the metal of the spool isn't exposed. That will prevent slipping and it saves on some braid. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted December 5, 2014 Super User Posted December 5, 2014 I just guess-ta-mate lol Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted December 5, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 5, 2014 Johns way is an excellent way to do it. What I do is fill the spool a little more than 1/2 full, which will be about the same on a 2500 size reel. Mike Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted December 5, 2014 Author Super User Posted December 5, 2014 Again , I'm guessing 40 to 50 yards of braid ...I'm hoping to get three fills out of a 150 yrd. braid spool . Quote
