BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I lost an even bigger one about a month ago. Fished off s piernabout 15 foot off thr water surface and was using a light action rod and 4 lb test line. Got over excited and managed to get it out of the water and tried to reel it up but when I did thst, the line snapped it was easily the biggest bass of my life, a good 4 or 5 inches longer than this one. This time no came prepared, brought a d ipnet. Hung this one on the first cast of the day on a 1.5 inch silver minnow tiny shad panfish assassin. I was more patient this time, heart was still pumping though. This time I let it wear itself down and my dad went down to the water level with the net and I eased him over enough to where dsd was able to net him. I was excited!!! Dont grt to fish much anymore and to have something like this strike while crappie/bluegill fishing just tickled me. I know its nothing to really brag about but I think it is a decent catch. 2.25 lbs perhaps? Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 25, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 25, 2014 Any idea on the length? Just going from the thickness of the fish and the size of the head and mouth I'd guess in the 2.5-3 pound range. 2 Quote
BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Didn't mean to paste the same pic twice, but this is a different angle. Dad had just came back up with it and got it out of the net. When it hit, I thought it was a rock at first andn then I felt it doing circles and said to myself "rocks dont do thst stuff on their own!". I wish I woulda had a scale eith me but sadly I did not. Dad said it was somewhere between 16 and 16.5 inches long when he measured it. Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 If you don't own a scale the best thing you can do is take a quick measurement. The length can give you rough estimate of its weight. Unless the bass is exceptionally thin or fat it is pretty accurate. The picture you took also is a tough angle to get a good look but based on it roughly anywhere from 2.00 to 2.75lbs Quote
corn-on-the-rob Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I was writing the post while you submitted yours. Yea that length puts it at close to 2.75 maybe a little more. It looks healthy. Good catch Quote
BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 It kinda shocked me it even bit. Temps were on the cool side andnit was windy, so I figured brim and crappie would be what id be catching that day. I had been to thwt same location a couple weeks prior and watched bass chase minnows along the shoreline and give some bluegill major heck. Had a blast catching this thing on that light rod and 4 lb line. Might not be a trophy fish, but still quality in my eyes. And it was on the chunky side too. I wanted to get a straight pic of thr belly to show jist how chunky it was, but dad told men to quit fooling around and told me to get back out there, and so I did lol. No more bass that day, but a couple decent drum, and 1 17 inch drum. Quote
BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Tennessee River. Off an old barge loading pylon/pier. There is a pretty good current in that area and there is a nice little drop off where the water goes from.about 5 feet deep to about 18-20 feet. That bass came in from the deep side of the drop off and hit that little bass assassin on the fall. I use a slow retrieve with that little jig and occasional twitch. That bass bit as the lure fell.back down after a twitch. I've caught several smaller 8-10 inch bass and crappie on a slow but steady retrieve with no twitching. The bass seem to realllllly like that silver shad/tiny minnow 1.5 inch panfish assassin. I've caught svere decent size drum on the black shad colored panfish assassin. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 One and three quarters pound. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Pound and a half maybe 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Given that it was on the chunky side, I'd have to say a little over 2 lbs 1 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Pound and a half maybe My guess as well. Quote
Super User Catt Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Compare his fist to the bass's head Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Less than 2 lbs. Quote
Rhino68W Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Don't listen to the jealous folks. Thats a 20 pounder all day! 1 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted November 25, 2014 Super User Posted November 25, 2014 Is that a junkyard you're fishing from? Quote
BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Nah. Old barge loading pylon/pier. I've caught a bunch of Drum on those jifs, several nice bluegill/shellcracker on nightcrawlers, a crappie on a jig and a couple catfish there as well on chicken liver. Seems that moving water attracts all kinds of fish therr, with the catfish caught on the deep aide of the drop off. Doesn't appear thst it has been fished too heavily. Quote
BammerBass Posted November 25, 2014 Author Posted November 25, 2014 Don't listen to the jealous folks. Thats a 20 pounder all day! lol I wouldn't lie and try to say it is a 5 over because I know thst would be a bunch of bull lol. But I think 2.5 lbs is a fair estimate. Between 16 and 16.5 inches length and being healthy looking 2.5 seems a reasonable guess. Again nothing to really write home about, but big enough to have fun with, especially on that light set up. The one I lost the time before looked like it was a solid 4, but alas, failed to get him up the pier before the line snapped so that doesn't count.Seems I've found a honey hole for several kinds of fish Quote
5fishlimit Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 I'd say it's about a 1 to 1.5 pounder. As Catt stated, "Compare his fist to the bass's head" Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 16-16.5 inches and chunky. Definitely a 2 llber. You can't really compare the fish to his hand because you don't know how big his hand is and the angle at which the pictures are taken will make the hands look a tad bigger than they really are. I take pictures like this all the time. To the OP, the best way to take a picture of a fish to tell how big it is is to take a picture of one from straight above while it lays next to your rod and reel as a comparison. If you look at my gallery I have a good example. Quote

Ozark_Basser Posted November 25, 2014 Posted November 25, 2014 Hanging from an accurate scale. Well of course that will work 1 Quote
