Lightweight Guides

So a neighbor wants me to build him a rod and wants it as light as possible. I gave him a choice of components, but he insists on not only standard size guides, but double foot ones, despite my arguments for using micros or single footed guides.  Are there any lightweight, double footed guides on the market? I haven't found any that mention weight reduction in their description other than titanium.. Also, how much weight is actually saved when it comes to one style vs. another? Between the difference in weight of the guides themselves and the extra thread and epoxy, I wouldn't think it would be over an ounce, would it?

I don't know how much extra weight it will add, an ounce doesn't sound out of the question though.  The problem is the extra weight will be in the worst possible place, out toward the tip.  It will definitely negatively effect the performance of the blank, compared to micros, which are really light.  If that's how he likes his rods, he probably won't know the difference, I sure would though.  What kind of rod will it be, for what techniques?

To each their own, as long as my guides don't rust out I'm fine with any stock guide.

As much as I hate them, Minimas or Recoils will fit the bill. Just make sure you use a ceramic tip.

Fuji KT single foot would be as rigid as any double foot you'd use and the KB guides are even more stout.

I concur, Recoils or Minima 4 are as light as you'll find given the mandate. If you go with Minimas  be sure to get the 4 as they are double swaged. And yes, use a ringed guide. The Fuji Titanium Torzite is as hard and light as you'll get there. The double wraps and finish required only compound the negatives, but you've given your advice so all you can do is let the client decide.

For the price you cannot beat the Minimas or the Nano Micro Guides. I haven't had a problem with them ever.

He decided, after more discussion, to go with a combination of double and single footed guides. He isn't that concerned with added weight, and decided on a Fuji Alconite set. The first two or three up from the reel seat will be double foot.   The build will be on a  7ft. white MHX blank using a split, cork handle and blank through reel seat.  It'll be a good, multiple purpose rod that won't be a big investment for him. If I like the finished product, I may even build one as a gift for one of my buddies.

I've used those blanks. The finish is very good. Pack your wraps tightly to assure the look you want.
