Being in the military has taught me many things. One of the more important ones is the importance of PCCs (Pre-Combat Checks), and PCIs (Pre-Combat Inspections). PCCs are done the day before to ensure all equipment is in good condition, and PCIs are doing just before. This got me thinking,

What does your Pre-Fishing Trip Check/Inspection List look like?

I never leave or attempt to leave without consulting my running to go list, i'm not going to go into detail on it, i will tell you wet ones and t.p. are on it every time though..

Theres just something about getting up to go fishing, going early and guzzling coffee i suppose that really "knocks something loose" about 20 minutes after i launch.

LOL

I also bring back up tighty whiteys, gotta be prepared

Wearing white underwear is just asking to fail as it is  :laugh5:

I keep all the important stuff in the same place all the time, that way I can run through my metal checklist faster and get on the road. It's important to me to have a checklist and I'll often have one in my head for the guys I'm fishing with. I didn't use to, until a buddy and I went on a weekend bowfishing trip and he forgot....his BOW!! Nothing like having to take turns shooting all weekend  :dazed-7:

My pre fishing check list-

  • boat hooked up

once that one is checked off I'm good to go!

Obviously this is for a normal every day trip if I was going across the country it'll be a little longer, but normally I keep everything in my boat so there's no need to go over any sort of check lists.

Yes i do for my boat and trailer. Walk around make surr everything is clamped down tight and tbe winch is envaged withthe boat sitting on the keel guard tight and that all lights are working.

When I head to the lake, my checklist is more about the boat than the gear.  I generally take 95% of what I have with me.  But the boat I always do the same thing before I leave.

  • Trim up an lock the motor in place
  • Check the back tie down straps
  • Unhook battery tender/charger
  • Hook up to the truck and lock the tongue
  • Flip back wheel, remove chauks
  • Connect chains
  • Connect wiring
  • Check crank and safety chain to the boat
  • Flip on lights and flashers to check lights
  • Walk around to check lights and tires
  • Double check that life jackets are in the boat
  • Check that the key is in the boat
  • Bump the motor to ensure it will turn over

Once at the lake I do a second quick checklist

  • Unhook tiedowns
  • Plug drain hole
  • Prime gas
  • Unlock motor
  • Disconnect crank and safety chain
  • Spin the prop when I walk by.  I dont know why, but I always do, lol.
  • Put anything else on the boat like coolers etc

When I leave I do another quick check off

  • Remove drain plug
  • Raise and lock motor in place
  • Connect tie downs
  • Spin the prop again.
  • Check strap and safety chain to boat
  • Check chains to the trailer
  • One last walk around to make sure everything is put up / tied down.

It's gotten to be such a habit I do the same thing everytime with out even thinking.  On occasion I'll double check the safety chains etc.  The more I think about it, I tend to spin the prop almost every time I walk past it, lol.  I have no idea why though...

I definitely see the value in having a checklist if you have a boat. Not having one though, I don't use a checklist. I have one small backpack that all my bank fishing tackle is kept in, so I grab that and my rod and go.

Don't forget your boat plug lol :)

i  just go through my gear the night before. make sure lures are in the right box and that i have my required tools like braid cutters and needle nose pliers. i have gone out to many times and forgot things at home.  like the time i put a hook in my finger i forgot my pliers and wire cutters. (wasnt aware of the line pull trick)

Weather, location and species dictate the rods and reels I take, fishing everyday my car is already loaded with every lure I need, no checklist.

No doubt there is a checklist.  This year it was mainly getting everything together and into the truck the night before.  Next year will be a much longer list as I will finally have a boat to go out on.  I am sure there will be a learning experience there.

Aren't you supposed to trailer with the boat in gear so the prop doesn't spin? That's always what I heard.

My checklist is almost exactly like yours, except I make sure I have my phone and wallet. Not sure why, as I've never forgotten them, but I always check.

I have a short checklist I keep in my wallet.  After forgetting boat keys once and a couple of rods on another occasion, I decided to make sure it didn't happen again.  Regarding cold weather gear, I always remember that for some reason, and I always keep a rain suit and sunscreen in the boat.

  1. rods
  2. lures
  3. JJ's
  4. hat - Keeps the light from entering between polarized glasses and forehead enhancing the view.
  5. camera
  6. tripod
  7. boat stopper
  8. boat keys
  9. water (or drink of choice)
  10. food
  11. toolbox
  12. lake map (always want a hard copy of a map even though I have it on my fish finder)
  13. life jackets
  14. charge batteries (night or day before)
  15. lights  (night or day before)
  16. tires (night or day before)
  17. gas (usually check the day before)
