I recently picked up a SK Denny Brewer structure jig.  Its advertised to reduce hangups, and come through cover better than jig types. Upon examing the head design, I found that it at least gave me the impression that it would do as advertised.

Took it out today for the first time, and it worked out fine.  No hangups.  But its only been one day.

So the question becomes this, Do 'structure jigs' (or anything similar) actually reduce hangups, or is this just a marketing gimick?

Your thoughts/experiences?

What on earth is a "structure jig" (too lazy to google)? EDIT: nvm, found them on TW.

Nu-jigs are by far the most snag-resistant jigs I've ever had the pleasure of fishing. (Unfortunately they're a little too pricey, and I tie my own anyway.

No company would ever use a marketing gimmick to catch a bass angler. We are too smart.:)

Looks like an arkey style, but with an offset worm hook.  The line tie is awfully exposed.  I'm sure it will work fine.  For snaggy applications, I like a football head or arkey from Siebert.

I dont know, thats kinda why Im posting this.  Ive never heard of a structure jig before.

Apparently, Both Sk and Omega make jigs labeled as "structure jig."

I will say this though, the shape of the head on this jig seems nice, conceptually.  The head is very broad and wide, and the underside(for lack of a better term), is sloped, as if to provide a ramped surface for sliding over cover.

So, I dont know.

Structure is another term for casting a jig horizontal; search "horizontal jigging", the link is referenced in Football 101 thread on this page.

Tom

Ps, you posted a commit.

That was my first thought, but apparently this jig has a short shank 2X thick hook. Would you recommend this jig to be fished on long casts even if the head shape and the hook angle are all right?

I've found the swinging football head style jigs to be extremely snag resistant. I don't like how the line tie is so stuck out there on the structure jigs, seems like the knot would take a beating, especially around zebra mussels.

Don't drive yourself crazy with all the jig types out there.

Just rig up your favorite jig and pig and throw them where you normally fish.

Sooner or later you will find the one type that works best in cover, etc. and does not get hung up or attract the grass and slop.

Experimenting with various jigs is always fun.  Just don't get upset if you lose a few in heavy cover as that is part of the process.

Take a pen and paper along so you can memorialize what happens to each type of jig. Put the notes with the jig back in your tackle box so you can formally transcribe your notes for future use.

No!

The *** jig is about 10% less expensive ($3.99 vs $4.30) and a better choice than the Strike King, IMO.

Football jig is about 1/2 the price and good for rocky structure.

When it comes to jigs every one has there own personal repertoire of confusion ;)

Structure the contour or shape of the bottom of the lake

Any jig is capable of being use to fish "structure" but they may not be effective for the available cover

Some jigs are designed for grass, some are designed for wood, some are designed for rock & others are designed to combine all three such as the SK Denny Brauer Structure Jig.

The best way to fish any jig is to learn its strengths and weaknesses.  All jigs will have them.  All lures will have them.  Learning how a specific jig functions in different types of structure will produce more fish and reduce hang ups.  There is a lot in design of a jig that helps a design move from one structure to another.  But if you do not learn the capabilities of the design it will lead to hang ups or poor results.

While I agree totally I will add 80% of hang ups are operator error  ;)

Many anglers try to force jigs through "cover" instead of finessing them through & they do the same with Texas Rigs

Now one must also keep in mind that a percentage of hang ups is expected but we need to keep that number down!

My favorite style hands down is the Arky jig because it will do a lot of things that the structure jig can do. For example, walking the jig up or down ledges, crawling it over humps and over deadfalls, and about the only place it really isn't good is the grass. I think 3 types of jigs will have you covered, one for rock and wood, one for grass, and a finesse style jig, now you can cover any situation.

Good to know Tom, thanks.  And I agree, the SK jig is terribly priced.  It was $4.99 at Dicks.   Despite its decent performance so far,  I dont have much intention of buying more jigs at that price.

Id be thrilled if you could take a moment to offer a quick opinion of the Omega Structure Jig, as well.

I couldn't agree more. The arky is my favorite. Comes through almost anything with a little shake.
