Finally finished up this rod that's been sitting in the corner all summer. Personally I'd rather fish than rod build which is why is took so long. I turned and epoxied the grip then laid out the guides months ago and since then it has sat. I was feeling ambitious today and decided to wrap and epoxy it up. Took me about 4 1/2 hours. I gotta give props to the guys that do this as a business. It is tedious work. For me it's hard to "get good" because I only build a rod every few months so the amount of practice I get is limited.

Anyways here's a pic of it on the dryer. I'll post some pics of the finished product in a few days when it's done.

You should put your support a little closer to the handle. You don't want your blank sagging like that, or I wouldn't.

Thanks for the heads up jrob. I'm standing here looking at the rod and I think it looks like that because I used the panoramic picture function on my iPhone.

It very well could be.  I don't think having a sag in the blank would hurt anything, as long as the movement didn't cause the rod to jump off the stand.  It's never happened to me but I have a friend who has had it happen a couple of times.   Post some pics when you get it finished up.

I'd be more worried about that sagging table! ;)

Yeah, I think it was the phone, like you said.  :eyebrows:

If your hand wrapper is the correct height, I'd use it for intermediate supports.  Even if it's not the right height, shim something to equal it out and use them.  When I turn a 7' rod, I usually have the motor and 3 other supports.

This looks like it would be very relaxing to do.

I guess it depends on what you find relaxing.  It can be very tedious and requires your full attention.  It's fun and rewarding but I don't find it particularly relaxing.

Trying to get the guides lined up would drive me insane I think. I spend enough time and money building baits, can't imagine if I started trying to build rods too  :dazed-7:

If the rod isn't level the epoxy will ball up on the low end of he wraps or develop a football shape. Split Tennessee grip?

The wraps came out pretty good. I used one coat of flex coat lite. I'm debating a second coat but actually don't mind the look of one light coat. Yup went with the Tennessee split grip again. I really like this grip but I'm thinking maybe a recessed skeleton seat one the next one or maybe a carbon fiber Tennessee grip. Decsions decisions.

I'm not a big split grip fan, but my favorite rod has a split Tennessee grip and I love it. I put the hook keeper in the split, so its out of the way. The 3 SCV rods on deck for myself will all have the same split Tennessee configuration.

The rod is done and dry took it out and tested it today on the river. Didn't get it bent but seems like it's going to work pretty good.

Last summer I was in search of a new spinning rod and posted a wtb ad for a St.croix 7'0 mlf avid rod. Well a gentleman contacted me and offered me a good price on one and mailed it to me. It was a pre-ipc avid but looked literally unused. I soon fell in love with the Rods power and action and decided I wanted another.

So I built a 7'0 mlf sc3 using the new guide concept with ss alconite reduction guides and size 2 rec single foot fly guides and a alconite top.

Pictures below are a comparison of the two rods. Except for the first pic my rod is on the right hand side.

The new rod will be used for soft plastics while the old one will be for hard baits and trolling. Thanks for looking.
