Fenwick Hmg

Looking to pick up one of these over winter as a jig rod, how the sensitivity? Looking to maybe try another brand, still have an old Fenwick HMX and I was pleased with it.

From what I have read they are very good rods & better than the HMX. I was going to buy one but the one I wanted was out of stock so I went with the Elite Tech Smallmouth instead.

Everyone that knows me knows I like Fenwick rods, I was really impressed with the Elite Tech Smallmouth rods and it lead me to try the Aetos and now I have a few of each model. The redesign of the HMG lead me to have to try one and I can tell you that one of the best things about these rods is the sensitivity, it isn't going to be on the same level as a GLX or Legend Elite but you would find it very hard to find that kind of sensitivity for the price point. I use the 7'ML spinning rod for tubes and light jigs and it performs really well but the sensitivity is surprising, very good rod.

I was waiting for Dan to reply.  Thanks.  I have an Aetos and 2 Smallmouth casting and one Smallmouth spinning after reading Dan's opinion on these rods.  I really, really like them.  No experience with the HMG, but that may change next year as I probably will be picking up one over the winter.

 

I hope some others using this model will chime in with their opinions.  I, too, have become a big fan of Fenwick rods.  You get a lot for your money.

The HMG's are tough rods. I caught this 41 incher today on mine.

I got a hmx... Very nice rod! Have caught up to 6 pound smallies on it. I have heard that the hmg is a good rod. Another good option if your willing to spend more would be a phenix m1 they are sweet rods I have a few. Check em out on tackle warehouse!

I have the old cork model HMGs and they are plenty sensitive and can be compared with the old cork Crucials/Avids. I don't have the recent models and not sure if they have improved or changed the blanks. They are now a lot cheaper and are worth the price. Fenwick has the some of the best sensitive rods in the lower price point.

I understand buying American but you gotta give other countries some credit, I have never had a problem with Chinese built rods.

Falcon, G.Loomis, Higher end St. Croix, Higher end Lamiglas  and Kistler with the exception of the pro series and carbon steel rods, are the majority of production made rods in America.  There are companies like North Fork Composites that make blanks here in the states for Kistler along with custom rod builders but most others are made overseas including Dobyns.

I have a 6'6" Fenwick HMG medium spinning rod. I liked it so much I bought 6'6" Fenwick HMG medium-heavy spinning rod. I have to say I think the HMG rods are very pretty and classy looking rods. Now I want a two piece HMG spinning rod.

Fenwick MHG graphites have been around a long time.  They are good rods.  I still have one that I bought in 1981.   They have a lifetime warranty.   Their customer service is good - just a few  hoops to jump through and send them $10 and you get a new rod.  I got a new 7' MH spinning rod that way this summer when I broke my old one doing something stupid ( got hung, put rod in a rod holder and started looking around my boat for my plug knocker and the wind blew me off the snag and the line didn't break but the rod tip did)  Anyway, I like the new handles compared to the older handles.  I think that the Fenwicks compare favorably to rods that cost more.  I've got a couple of AETOS rods, mainly because at the time Rogers in Liberty had the action I wanted in the AETOS line and not the HMG line, although they carry both.  Anyway, the AETOS is a good rod also for a little more money.
